John A. Demoisey, 64, top motorcycle racer
John A. Demoisey loved a challenge, and when he mastered one challenge, he found another one.

Mr. Demoisey, 64, who died Saturday at his home in Hebron, started drag-racing motorcycles in 1962, then moved on to dirt track racing before retiring to help the racing career of his son, John II.

After his son was killed on the racetrack at age 22 in 1983, Mr. Demoisey learned about the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association, which sanctions races of vintage motorcycles.

That proved to be the challenge he needed. He quickly became one of the top finishers on the association's circuit.

In 1999, he reached the pinnacle of the sport by winning the points championship with a perfect and never-equaled 10, 000-point series, including a first-place finish at Daytona International Speedway, the association's premier race.

"He was just ecstatic. He was just on top of the world, " said his widow, Virginia "Ginny" Thompson Demoisey. The fact that he won without sponsors on a "homemade" Triumph gave him the most pride, she said.

But his competitive nature didn't keep him from advising other racers on how to make their motorcycles run better. His widow said she often teased him about helping other racers beat him.

"He wanted to see an engine run. He wasn't interested in the glory, " she said.

He always told her that if he died racing, not to grieve, because he would have died doing what he loved. Instead, he died from cancer.

In August, after taking a year off because he was too sick to ride, he told her he would like to ride just one more time. She took him to the closest race, in Putnam Park, Ind., where he finished third.

"He was so weak when he came off the track that we had to grab the bike, " she said.

Mr. Demoisey also worked as an auto and motorcycle mechanic for his business, Demoisey Enterprises, which stayed booked 30 days in advance and never had to advertise. He also served as the head elder for the Bullittsville Christian Church.

"He didn't spout religion, but he felt it very much, " his widow said.
