Manford Wayson Jr., could be counted on

Manford Wayson Jr. was the kind of person people depended on, said his widow, Betty Barnett Wayson.

"If I was the kind of person who knew how to word stuff, I could take the whole page and tell everyone how wonderful he was, " she said.

Mr. Wayson, 71, of Newport, who died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, was born and raised in Newport, where his widow said he knew just about everyone.

He worked for the city of Newport for 41 years, retiring as the superintendent of public works.

He avidly followed politics through reading the newspaper and watching television.

He enjoyed doing things for his family, his wife said.

"The kids and the grandkids knew if they ever needed anything at all, just come to papaw, and they knew he'd be there, " she said.

"Five children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Our hallway is full of pictures, " she said.

Other survivors include sons, Chuck Wayson of Newport and David Wayson of Highland Heights; daughters, Debbie McIntosh and Saundra Wayson, both of Southgate, and Cathy Christian of Silver Grove; and a brother, Vernon Wayson of Largo, Fla.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Roger Allen Benson, 60, of Perry Park, formerly of Covington, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a registry clerk with the United State Postal Service, Cincinnati, and a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie J. Gravitt Benson; sons, Roger Benson of Covington and Andrew Benson of Villa Hills; a stepdaughter, Elisa Smith of Burlington; stepsons, David Pribble and Neal White, both of Union; brothers, Gil Benson of Perry Park, Richard Benson of Edgewood and Bobby Benson of Covington; sisters, Gloria Fahey of Westwood, Ohio, Janet Sowder of New Vienna, Ohio, Betty Burk and Carol Benson, both of Edgewood; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Doris Sears Burnett, 65, of Dry Ridge, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at her home. She was a retired manager with Dairy Mart convenience stores. Her husband, Eugene Burnett, died in 2001.

Survivors include sons, Rick Burnett of Nicholasville, Jeff Burnett and Steve Burnett, both of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Pam Snider of Taylor Mill; brothers, Donnie Sears of Arizona, Wilton Sears of Lexington, Wayne Seas of Shopville, Gib Sears of Murray and Jerry Sears of Texas; sisters, Mickie Beechler of Indianapolis and Peggy Evans of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, Somerset. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mill Springs National Cemetery, Nancy.

Mary Ruth Chamberlain, 88, of Maysville, died at 11 p.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of Central United Methodist Church, Maysville. Sons, Ralph Chamberlain Jr., Jerry Chamberlain, Franklin Chamberlain, Terry Chamberlain and Tommy White, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph "Lucky" Chamberlain; sons, Chester Chamberlain and Larry Chamberlain, both of Maysville, Donnie Chamberlain of Ripley, Ohio, Raymond White and Deannie White, both of Dover, Tenn.; daughters, Linda Hopwood of Maysville and Mona Tracy of Terra Haute, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Marvin Porter Davis, 77, of Owenton, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a truck driver and a member of Owenton Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Beckham Davis; sons, Dennis Davis of Poplar Grove, Greg Davis of Lexington, Kevin Davis of Worthville and Timothy Davis of Owenton; a daughter, Rita English of Owensboro; sisters, Ruby Judy of Ripley, Ohio, and Bernice Wash of Owenton; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042; or Cancer Care Center of St. Elizabeth Medical Center, 1 Medical Village Dr., Edgewood, Ky. 41017.

Charles C. Day, 90, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a typesetter with the Cincinnati Enquirer, a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Day.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.

Tracy Ann Petrie Evans, 31, of Alexandria, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Thomas Evans; daughters, Abigail Anne Evans and Natalie Carol Evans, both of Alexandria; her parents, Robert and Carol Anne Petrie of Cold Spring; a sister, Amy Marie Hamm of Cincinnati; and grandmother, Dorothy Petrie of Cold Spring.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Tracy Petrie Evans Memorial Fund, in care of Fifth Third Bank, 7953 Alexandria Pike, Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Rufus Grant Gabbard, 89, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired machinist with Michael Art Bronze and a member of Taylor Mill Pentecostal Church. His wife, Golda Mae Gabbard, died in 1994. A daughter, Avanell Gabbard, died in 1936.

Survivors include sons, Daymond Gabbard of Demossville and Willis Gabbard of Erlanger; daughters, Mildred Fox of Independence and Bernice Stanton of Butler; a brother, Delbert Gabbard of Independence; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Taylor Mill Pentecostal Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Rev. Robert L. Gruber, 75, of Fort Wright, died Monday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Edna Mae Theiss Herb, 80, of Middletown, Ohio, formerly of Fort Thomas, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Garden Manor Retirement Village in Middletown.

She was a homemaker and a retired assembly worker with Wadsworth Watch Case Co., Dayton.

Survivors include her husband, Leroy P. Herb; a daughter, Bonnie Fangman of Lakeside Park; sisters, Rosemary Sticklen and Emma Jane Hockey, both of Fort Thomas; a brother, James Theiss of Fort Thomas; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial was this morning at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or Garden Manor Retirement Village, 6898 Hamilton-Middletown Road, P.O. Box 850, Middletown, Ohio 45042.

Ronnie L. Hornsby, 66, of Florence, died at 3:49 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a foreman with Queen City Metro, a member of Latonia Baptist Church and a Army and Air Force veteran. His wife, Berniece Hornsby, and daughter, Janet Hutton, both died in 2000.

Survivors include a son, Del Hornsby of Independence; daughters, Sandra Butcher of Elsmere and Beverly Horton of Florence; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Janice Mae Ligon, 71, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was an administrator with Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Brown of Hebron and Pamela Kleiman of Fort Thomas; a foster son, Wayne Tingle of Falmouth; a brother, Donald L. Ennis of Louisville; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Dallasburg Cemetery, Wheatley.

Barney Massey, 81, of Florence, died at 2:10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired teamster with Consolidated Freightways, a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Covington and Masonic Lodge No. 747 in Hebron, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. A son, Richard Larry Massey, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Kate Boler Massey; a daughter, Patricia Ann Scheree of Hebron; daughters, Lena Wiley of Cincinnati, Ruby Massey and Edith Massey, both of Louisville; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Justin Michael Newman, son of Jason and Rachael Newman of Sparta, was stillborn Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Other survivors include grandparents, Jim Crock of Detroit, Kathleen Crock of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Kay Simpson of Sparta and Clay Newman of Petersburg; and great-grandparents, Helen Kaye of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Bob and Mae Newman of Cherokee Village, Ark.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Paint Lick Cemetery. Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling arrangements.

Edith M. Petersman, 74, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Judson Village Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Petersman; daughters, Ann "Rooney" Petersman of Crestview Hills, Janie Dollar of Austell, Ga., Alice Ashcraft, Lori Stroehlein and Christine Petersman, all of Cincinnati; a son, Joseph Petersman of Miami; a brother, John Kallmeyer of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati.

David H. Schlake, 62, of Burlington, died Monday at his home. He was a car man with CSX Railroad and an Army veteran.

Survivors include daughters, Diane Chapman of Fort Thomas and Tanya Stephany of Newport; sons, Mike Schlake of Newport and Rick Schlake of Germany; stepdaughters, Reva Jean Downard of Alexandria and Linda Darlene Belden of Vicksburg, Mich.; stepsons, Virgil Bowling of Dayton and Edward Bowling of Bellevue; a sister, Ruth Ann Ferguson of Florence; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
