Father Robert Gruber, had a love for travel
The Rev. Robert Louis Gruber had a taste for traveling during his 44 years of service as a priest in the Diocese of Covington, but he wasn't able to indulge it fully until he retired in 1997.
He went on cruises, he traipsed the United States, and he fulfilled a dream in 2001 with a world tour. Highlights of that five-week trip included riding camels in front of the Pyramids in Egypt and walking on the Great Wall of China.
"He loved to travel, " said his sister, Joan Lockhorn, of Price Hill in Cincinnati. "He'd go with other groups or with priest friends. He made a lot of friends on his tours."
Rev. Gruber died Monday at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas. He was 75.
Her brother got the notion to pursue the priesthood during his days serving Mass at St. John Church in Covington, Lockhorn said.
"He really liked serving, and from pretty young on, he wanted to be a priest, " she said.
After attending Covington Catholic High School, he went on to seminary and college at St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md. He studied philosophy and theology at Catholic University of America in Washington and was ordained in Covington in 1953 by Bishop William T. Mulloy.
For the first 13 years of his ministry, he split time between teaching -- at Covington Catholic, Covington Latin, St. Thomas High, Newport Catholic and Our Lady of Providence -- and parish work. He later was associate pastor at St. Frances de Sales and St. Stephen in Newport, Blessed Sacrament in Fort Mitchell and St. Bernard in Dayton. He was chaplain at Carmel Manor and Holy Family Home in Melbourne before he became associate pastor at St. Therese in Southgate, where he worked the last 15 years of his career.
"He made a lot of hospital visits, " Lockhorn said. "He was pretty faithful about that."
