Helen Heekin, 85, never drove a car
Helen Louise Heekin never drove a day in her life, but she was always ready to go out to dinner with any relative or friend who would take her.
"She would say, 'I'll be ready in 10 minutes, '" said her daughter, Patricia Cassini of Erlanger.
Mrs. Heekin, who died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East at age 85, shied away from driving because she saw how hard it was for Cassini to learn. Cassini said she learned from her father, Howard M. Heekin, who was not the best teacher.
After her husband died of cancer, Mrs. Heekin met Rita McGovern at a ceramics class. Both recently widowed, they learned that they shared the same birthday and struck up a friendship.
For the next 25 years, until Mrs. Heekin's death, Cassini said, the two did everything together. McGovern always did the driving.
Mrs. Heekin was born in Cincinnati and grew up there, graduating with honors from Woodward High School.
She met her husband while going to night school. He sold his car to buy her an engagement ring, Cassini said.
They married
in 1939 and moved to Bellevue, where he lived, then to Fort Mitchell, where they lived until his death of cancer 36 years later.
Her mother was a sweet person who never had a nasty word to say about anyone and never judged anyone, Cassini said, and that made her popular.
