Emma Hutter, 'pioneer' who overcame obstacles
In a time where women were supposed to stay at home and raise children, Emma M. Scheper Hutter was the exception.
Mrs. Hutter, who died Sunday at 98 at St. Charles Care Center, Covington, served for more than 40 years as the chief financial officer and a member of the board of directors of the former Wadsworth Electric Co. in Covington.
"She was a kind of pioneer, " said her great-nephew, Paul Carl of Edgewood. "She never encountered an obstacle she didn't feel like she could overcome."
When she retired at 70, she volunteered full-time for 15 years at <243>Catholic Social Services in Covington, doing the payroll, Carl said.
When she wasn't working, Mrs. Hutter enjoyed traveling, tennis, cards, piano, gardening, playing the horses and drinking martinis.
"She was really somebody who was full of life, " he said. "She always had a positive attitude.
"She just enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends."
She was still going on senior bus tours at age 95, he said, and didn't really slow down until she fell at her home in Fort Mitchell last summer.
She and her late husband, Arthur Hutter, who died in 1990, never had any children. But all of her 14 nieces and nephews looked on her as a grandmother, Carl said.
She also kept up with her 92 great-nieces and great-nephews, he said, and could tell you all about what their families were doing.
"She was a very strong-willed, empowering individual, but at the same time, very caring, very loving and devoted to her family, her friends and God also, " Carl said.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, St. Gemma Guild, St. Mary's Ladies Society, St. Charles Auxiliary and Fort Mitchell Senior Citizens.
