Harold C. Smith, 94, was involved in his community
Harold C. Smith was a person who people trusted.
"He was a guy who, when he made a commitment that he was going to get a job done, or do this or that, there was never a question that it would be done, " said his son, Hal Smith, president of Pikeville College.
Others must have felt the same way about him, because Mr. Smith, who died Monday at his home in Southgate, won election to several offices in his 94 years.
The heating and air conditioning contractor was a former president of the Cincinnati Heating and Piping Contractors Association. He also was a former president of the Southgate Optimist Club and former chairman of the Southgate Independent School District's board.
The latter two offices reflected Mr. Smith's love for children and his interest in education.
"I was thinking today, driving up, that there was never any question about my sister and myself going to college. It was just a given, " his son said. "We were the first in our family to go."
In his spare time, Mr. Smith liked to tinker in his basement shop, and grow strawberries or roses in his garden.
He was a retired vice president of Geiler Co. and a member of the Southgate Super Seniors.
