Robert Hampton, wrote songs for country stars
When Robert Daniel Hampton retired after 25 years in the Air Force, he headed to Nashville to have a serious go at something he'd been doing casually most of his life: songwriting.
He proved prolific -- with hundreds of songs to his credit, most of them published -- as well as good at it. Some of the biggest stars in country music -- Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Jr. and Faron Young among them -- recorded his songs.
Among his work were Lynn's "There's More to Leavin' than Just Saying Goodbye" and Williams' "Does Your Momma Know You're Here?"
"He wrote most of his life, " said a brother, Barry Hampton of Latonia. "He always wanted to try it in Nashville, and he accomplished quite a bit there."
Mr. Hampton died Tuesday morning at his Park Hills home. He was 68.
Mr. Hampton was a surgical technician and a nurse for most of his Air Force career. He served one tour of duty in Vietnam and another in Korea.
He returned to his native Northern Kentucky about five years ago, when his health began to fail. He died of heart problems, his brother said.
"He had quite a life, served his country and he got to do some writing, " said Barry Hampton. "I was proud of him."
