Charlotte Brown Foltz, worked as a cracker-breaker
Charlotte Brown Foltz was a cracker-breaker. Before automation, bakeries employed people to take large sheets of crackers from ovens and break them into smaller pieces for packing.
In the late 1930s, Mrs. Foltz broke crackers at Strietmann Bakery, now Keebler Bakery, in Mariemont, Ohio.
"She told me she hated it, " said Mrs. Foltz's nephew, Charles Crosby of Erlanger. "She said it was so hot by the ovens."
Mrs. Foltz, 86, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
After leaving the cracker-breaking business, Mrs. Foltz was a waitress and cook at the now defunct Rosenook restaurant in downtown Cincinnati.
She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park, Fort Mitchell Senior Citizens, Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens, Christian Widows and Singles Club and the Lamplighters Club of Immanuel United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Foltz's husband of 30 years, John Foltz, died in 1974.
Crosby said he was "pretty much raised" by his aunt and uncle.
"They were two incredible people, " he said. "My aunt was fun-loving and a real talker. She could tell stories and talk your arm off.
"She was also a very hard worker. After she got married
and became a housewife, she would spend a whole day ironing. Everything that got washed -- including underclothes -- got ironed.
"She was great to be around. She was a tough old gal and will be sorely missed."
