Jack Krogman, loved activities with family
Relatives of Jack Donald Krogman Sr. -- compiling a photo display Monday for his wake -- were amazed at how many pictures they found of him with one of his 22 grandchildren or seven great-grandchildren in his lap, said his wife, Barbara Krogman.
Mr. Krogman, 68, who died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, was very family-oriented, starting with his own parents, his wife said.
Born in the living room of an eight-room house at 330 Grandview Avenue in Bellevue, Mr. Krogman left home when he was 20. Then, when his parents died, he and his wife bought the house and lived there for another 36 years.
"It was home to him, " Mrs. Krogman said. "When I had to put him in the nursing home, I knew he would give up. That's why I put it off as long as I possibly could."
Mr. Krogman enjoyed musicals like "Fiddler on the Roof" or "The Wizard of Oz, " films that he could watch with the kids, his wife said. He also liked camping, hunting and fishing.
Four of their six children played in the Bellevue High School Band, so Mr. Krogman drove the band bus for nine years. "We took the kids all over Kentucky, " Mrs. Krogman said.
He also served as an umpire in the youth baseball leagues for the Bellevue Vets. He attended First Baptist Church of Bellevue and was a member of the Navy Reserve.
Mr. Krogman was a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, many of them when he worked for the Swift Meat Packaging Co. in Cincinnati. He capped his firefighting career by serving as Bellevue fire chief for five years.
He had a very dry sense of humor, his wife said. "You weren't sure <243>whether he was kidding until you looked at his big blue eyes."
Other survivors include daughters, Sandra Iski of Newport, Donna Sparks of Bellevue and Peggy Kendall of Independence; sons, Joseph Krogman of Dayton, Patrick Krogman of Fort Wright and Jack Krogman, Jr., of Dayton; sisters, Fay Hoffmann, Hazel Pierce and Ethel Steidel, all of Bellevue, and Jeannette Jones of Covington; a brother, Edward Krogman of Evansville, Ind.; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
