Thomas Helson Sr., devoted to children
Thomas H. Helson Sr.'s devotion to children was exceeded only by his affection for them.
Mr. Helson, who died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, served 15 years on the Ludlow Board of Education, stepping down only when he and his family moved to Edgewood.
As president and a member of the Ludlow Rotary Club, he regularly took kids from the Children's Home of Northern Kentucky ice skating, to ball games and on other outings.
He doted on his six grandchildren, especially Cameron Lewis, who came to his grandparents' home every day after school.
Mr. Helson, who was 67, would call his grandson every night. "Tom would say, 'Goodnight, Cameron, Papaw loves you, '" said Mr. Helson's wife, Elizabeth "Helen" Cecil Helson.
Mr. Helson got involved with the school board when his own kids were in the Ludlow schools. He was more than just a policy-maker, said his wife; he responded when students came to him needing help.
"He helped the seniors come up with ways to raise money one year when they wanted to go on senior trip, " she said. "He was a sponsor and lined up other people who gave money, too. If not for him, they wouldn't have gone."
Mr. Helson worked with his father at the Speedy Shell Station in Ludlow for about 24 years. When his father's health started failing, Mr. Helson began looking for another career, and found it in real estate.
He got his realtor's license in 1976 and worked for two other agencies before starting Tom Helson Realty in Edgewood about 10 years ago. His agency dealt most with commercial properties, his wife said.
He was a member of Unity Lodge No. 478 F&AM in Ludlow and the Northern Kentucky Association of Realtors.
