Julius Bare, never let illness get best of him
Diagnosed with kidney disease at age 45, Julius A. Bare battled the illness to a standstill in the next 20 years, most of which he spent on dialysis. Not even two failed transplants got him down, said his wife, Kitty.
"He accepted his illness and worked through it, " she said. "He kept fighting it. He never let it get the best of him."
Mr. Bare died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 65.
He had his first kidney transplant in 1984, a year after he was diagnosed with the disease. That organ worked for 3 years before his body rejected it. He rejected a second transplant, attempted in 1988, almost immediately.
Mr. Bare didn't let his need for dialysis three times a week curtail the traveling he and his wife liked to do, said a daughter, Jeanie Bailey, of Milford, Ohio. He would get treatment on the road in places like Florida, Houston and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
"The social worker at his place here would help him find clinics where he could dialysize, " Bailey said.
Mr. Bare, an engineering specialist for 40 years for Cincinnati Gas & Electric, played on company softball and basketball teams for about 10 years. Later he coached CYO basketball at St. Andrew in Milford, Ohio, and won a city championship in the early 1970s.
He was a sports fan, too, particularly when his grandchildren were involved.
He liked to watch them play soccer and basketball, and swim and cheer lead, said Bailey.
"He was a private, quiet man, but he had strong opinions on things and a good sense of humor, " Kitty Bare said.
