Jesse Bailey, 82, was 'self-made man'
About 25 years ago, Jesse Bailey contracted a staph infection that crippled his hands.
He had to retire from his job as a stationary engineer and steam fireman -- the person who kept the boilers going -- at the former Bayless Bros. clothing factory in Covington.
Mr. Bailey, of Latonia, who died Wednesday at age 82 at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, didn't like to stay idle.
So he took a job picking up trash in the Value City parking lot in Latonia, where he worked many years and made many friends at a nearby Hardee's restaurant, said his wife, Jill Yates Jaeger Bailey.
Mr. Bailey had little formal schooling, and learned his trade by studying books and passing a licensing test, his wife said.
"He was kind of a self-made man, " she said.
Mr. Bailey was an avid fisherman, and he especially liked to surf fish. He and his wife regularly went to Florida in October to fish for a month.
He was a member of Wilmington Lodge No. 362 F&AM in Fiskburg and Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
"There isn't anything I could say that wouldn't be good about him, " his wife said.
Other survivors include a son, Greg Bailey of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a daughter, Marilyn Palmer of Dayton, Ohio; brothers, Virgil Bailey of Detroit and Richard Bailey of Beattyville; sisters, Dorothy Cutshaw of Detroit and Ada Moore of Beattyville; and a grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Shirley Jean Cummins, 66, of Berry, died Wednesday at her home. She was a caregiver and a member of Oakwood Baptist Church, Cynthiana.
Survivors include her husband, Ernie Cummins; daughters, Linda Messer of Georgetown, Brenda Hall of Cynthiana and Nora Gentry of Berry; sons, Kenneth H. Gentry and Delbert Gentry, both of Berry; brothers, Ernest Reece of Walton and George Reece Jr. of Heidelberg; and sisters, Delores Rosell of Lakeside, Fla., Rebecca Hundley of Sidney, Ohio, Gladys Allen of Yellow Rock, Glendean Tiery of Winchester, Modenna Turner of Spencer Ridge and Bernice Mays of Irvine.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Newman Funeral Home, Beattyville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Newman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Beatty Place Cemetery, Lee County.
Dorothy B. Green, 97, of Hebron, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron.
Marvin Odell Hamilton, 69, of Walton, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired senior test engineering manager with General Electric in Cincinnati, a member of Elfun Society, Cincinnati, General Electric Retirement Association and Newport High School Alumni Association. A daughter, Gayle Hamilton Gray, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Webster Hamilton; a daughter, Terry Meadors of Union; a son, Raymond Hamilton of Florence; a sister, Ruby Ward of Silver Lake; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite A2, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Alma Naugle Hedges, 86, of Berlin, died Wednesday at Trilogy Health Center, Cynthiana. She owned Hedges' Grocery in Bracken County and was a member of Johnsville United Methodist Church and the Johnsville Homemakers. Her husband, Bernard Hedges, died in 1976.
Survivors include a niece and a great-niece.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Methodist Children's Home, 2050 Lexington Road, Versailles, Ky. 40383.
John W. Hobbs, 85, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired truck driver with Wiedemann Brewery, a member of Latonia Christian Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Dangler Hobbs; a brother, Ted Hobbs of Indiana; a sister, Ida Wittman of Fort Thomas; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Howard W. Lenhoff, 57, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an employee of BAWAC, Florence.
Survivors include a brother, Ronald Lenhoff of Independence.

Ruth Elaine Velosky Lickert, 83, of Fort Thomas, died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Northern Kentucky Homemakers Association and Highland Hills Baptist Church, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include a daughter, Jill Donnermeyer of Fort Thomas; sons, Jack H. Lickert and Mark A. Lickert, both of Fort Thomas; sisters, Margie Saunders of Dayton and Mildred Yonkers of Belle Valley, Ohio; brothers, Walter A. Velosky of Williamstown, Rev. E. Arlene Kearns Slade, 72, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William E. Slade, and a son, Wayde Slade, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Carl Slade, William E. Slade Jr., Tony C. Slade and Scott Slade, all of Cynthiana, and James W. "Gabby" Slade of Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Patricia L. Slade, Margie Bonzo, Dixie Caines and Penny Williams, all of Cynthiana; a brother, Joe Kearns of Cynthiana; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dennis E. Straus, 55, of Cold Spring, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a self-employed construction worker.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori Straus of Fairfield, Ohio; a son, Michael Straus of Florence; a sister, Diane Schwing of Palatka, Fla.; and a brother, Dale Straus of California.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery, Mentor.
Jessie L. Wilson, 98, of Hebron, died at 12:31 p.m. Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a retired press feeder with Gibson Art Co., a former employee of Spring Meadows Baptist Children's Home in Middletown and a member of Sand Run Baptist Church.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Sand Run Baptist Church, Hebron.
