Clifford Coyle, 58, served Latonia Lakes community
As he spoke about Clifford Coyle's service to the community and his years as a volunteer firefighter, Doug Coyle gave his father perhaps the ultimate accolade.
"Dad was a big influence on me, " Doug Coyle said. "I always wanted to be like Dad."
Clifford Coyle, 58, of Latonia Lakes, died Wednesday at his home.
He served as mayor of the small Kenton County city for two terms in the 1990s, taking the appointment after the previous mayor and a city councilman were indicted on fraud charges involving a tire-selling scheme. Coyle was proud to accept the challenge, and then was twice re-elected.
During his terms, he worked to ensure that the city would receive sewer services from Sanitation District No. 1.
"The neighbors simply thought Dad was the right person for the job, " Doug Coyle said.
"He said, `Maybe I can make a difference and get it straightened out."'
Before that, Clifford Coyle spent more than a decade as the squad chief for Oak Ridge Fire Department before it became a part of Covington. He then worked to ensure that his community would receive fire coverage from Taylor Mill.
His son, now a firefighter with the Taylor Mill Fire Department, said the department would honor his father with an honor guard and funeral escort.
"He really loved the fire services, " Doug Coyle said.
Clifford Coyle was an assistant foreman at Post Glover Electric Co., a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, and secretary of Latonia Lakes Men's Club.
