John Joseph Klaine, 78, meat cutter for 30 years
If you ever lived in Covington or did your grocery shopping there, chances are you've eaten a piece of meat cut by John Joseph Klaine.
Mr. Klaine worked for 30 years as a meat cutter with the Economy Meat Market in Covington. He met several friends during his years as a butcher and he often asked them to take part in his favorite recreational activity: golf.
After retiring in his late 60s, Mr. Klaine still worked at the market three days a week at the request of his doctor, who told him he needed to keep active after experiencing heart failure.
"We had beaucoup friends, " said his wife of 59 years, Vivian Klaine. "I think one of the reason he worked as long as he did was because he enjoyed the people so much."
Mr. Klaine, 78, of Erlanger, died at 2 p.m. Friday at his home. He was an Army veteran of World War II who earned a Purple Heart after being hit by shrapnel near his eyes.
He also volunteered at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, where his daughter worked as a diabetic nurse.
Mrs. Klaine attempted to learn golf and even bought her own set of clubs. She tried playing twice before deciding her husband would be better off playing with other people.
She settled for playing euchre with her husband every Monday night with their neighbors, leaving other family members to fill in as golfing partners.
"He was a wonderful husband, and he loved his grandkids very much, " Mrs. Klaine said. "He was a very sweet man."
