Kenneth Page, served public as officer, friend

In and out of uniform, former Newport police Lt. Col. Kenneth E. Page served his community.

A 23-year-veteran of the force, Mr. Page also was active with the Buener Boys and Girls Club of Newport and was on the board when the chapter moved from Sixth Street to better accommodations on East 10th Street.

"He was always steady, always cheerful, " said Mr. Page's son-in-law, Steve Saunders of Bellevue.

"He was always ready to help anybody he could."

Mr. Page, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 61.

A native of Newport, Mr. Page graduated in the early 1960s from Newport High School, where he was a star baseball and basketball player.

He earned a bachelor's degree on a baseball scholarship at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

Mr. Page served three years in the U.S. Army and married his wife, Diana, in 1975.

He got a job as a patrol officer with the Newport Police Department in 1973 and worked his way up to assistant chief -- after a career that included stints as a detective and vice officer -- before retiring in 1996.

"He just always was interested in police work and just poured himself into the job, " Saunders said.

"He worked during some really rough years in Newport, when there was a lot of gambling and political troubles. It was not a very highly esteemed job, but he enjoyed it."

After Mr. Page left the force, he became assistant director of safety and security at St. Luke Hospital East.

He was an assistant Campbell County jailer when he died.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 2 and the Campbell County Democratic Club.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Linda Saunders of Bellevue and Susan Burgoyne and Tina Kim, both of Newport; brothers, William Pigg of Cincinnati and Jerry Pigg of Wilder; a sister, Diane Darnell of Newport; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Radel Funeral Home in Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati, Buener Club, 36 E. 10th St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Mary Louise Scheben Aseere, 68, of 3:25 a.m. Monday at Anderson Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a retired office manager with the division of Overhead Door, Newport, and a volunteer with the Point.

Survivors include daughters, Vicki Gibson of Fort Thomas and Julie McKibbon of Verona; sons, Tea Aseere of Fort Thomas and Jay Aseere of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Roseanne Crowe of Erlanger; brothers, Victor Scheben of Fort Mitchell, Tommy Scheben of Villa Hills and Donny Scheben of Crestview Hills; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Burial was in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Adult Day Care, Salvation Army, 340 W. 10th St., Newport, Ky. 41071. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Winona Bird, 84, of Latonia, died at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, Latonia. Her husband, Darwin Bird, died in 1994.

Survivors include sons, Ron Bird of New Richmond, Ohio, and Roger Bird of Taylor Mill; a sister, Lenora Rust of Latonia; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, 2735 Ashland Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Barbara Bishop, 74, of Crescent Springs, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a secretary with Meade Paper Co. and a member of First Baptist Church of Ludlow and Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, John Bishop, died in 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Grinninger of Fort Thomas; sisters, Mabel Hacker of Danville and Lillian McPherson of Ludlow; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, 400 Linden St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016.

Robert F. Ficker, 84, of Fort Mitchell, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired salesman with a meat processing company.

Survivors include daughters, Donna "Sug" Coessens of Texas, Beverly Leeson of New Jersey and Suzanne Farrell of New York; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will begin there at 10:15 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Joseph Old Cemetery, Cincinnati. Frederick Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Rita Fischer, 83, of Crestview Hills, died at 5:12 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker, a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and a Navy veteran of World War II. Her husband, Harry G. Fischer, died in 2001.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Franklin "Gene" Holloway, 82, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Covington, died Friday in Sevierville. He was an Army veteran. His wife, Bonnie, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret E. Holloway; daughters, Deborah Fugate and Beverly James; sons, Thomas Holloway and Jeffrey Holloway; a brother, Dan Holloway; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Local services will be at the convenience of the family. Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, is handling arrangements.

Harry Leslie Porter, 92, of Independence, died Monday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation, Highland Heights.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Porter DuPont of Fort Thomas; sons, Jack Porter of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Gary Porter of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Hilda E. Sand, 75, of California, died at 4 p.m. Monday at the home of her sister in California. She was a housekeeper.

Survivors include sisters, Clara Hogle, Ruth Erb and Rita Sand, all of California; and brothers, George Sand and Paul Sand, both of California.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075; or St. Mary SMART Campaign, 121 W. Main St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Larry O. Sexton, 53, of Florence, died Tuesday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Fletchie Cox Sorrell, 72, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. She was a homemaker and a member of New Zion Baptist Church. Her husband, William Sorrell, and son, William Stacey Sorrell, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include brothers, Edward "Buck" Cox of Butler, Delbert Cox of Peach Grove, Curtis Cox of Falmouth and Chanis Cox of Lenoxburg; a grandchild, a step-grandchild and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Darrell Wayne Stout, 47, of Worthville, died Tuesday in Worthville. He was a construction worker with Gibson Construction Co., Worthville.

Survivors include a son, Christopher Todd Stout; his mother, Alma Stout of Worthville; sisters, Patricia Martin of Carrollton, Bonnie Wilhoite of Milton and Teresia Skirvin of Sparta; brothers, Bobby Stout, Jimmy Stout and Carl Stout, all of Worthville; and a grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.

Allanda Jade Toll, 2 months, of Park Hills, died at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her parents, Thomas E. Toll III and Danielle Jakob of Park Hills; a brother, Tristan Jakob of Park Hills; and grandparents, Gary and Vera Slone of Burlington and Mel and Jackie Spegal of Memphis, Tenn.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Mildred J. Vater, 80, of Alexandria, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a former member of Campbell County Homemakers, Calvary Baptist Church in Covington and Senior Saints Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, Darrell Vater and Tom Vater, both of Butler; daughters, Paula House, April White and Sandy Wilson, all of Alexandria, Susan Thompson of Elyria, Ohio, and Nancy Wallace of Cold Spring; sisters, Garnet Jones of Independence and Ruby Smith of Alexandria; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Gideon International, P.O. Box 252, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076.

Harold Junior Wainscott, 68, of Corinth, died Wednesday a t St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a forklift operator with Square D and a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Norman Wainscott of Corinth, and sisters, Melrose Lynn of Williamstown and Inez Kinman of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
