Carrieleen Roberts, 91, was `very strong'

Carrieleen "Carolyn" Roberts displayed the toughness befitting her mountain heritage until the very end of her life.

She withstood breast cancer, the deaths of two of her four children and her husband, and lived the last 24 years of her life alone in her Fort Thomas home, taking care of herself.

She worked a garden last year, and before she was taken to St. Luke Hospital East on New Year's Eve with a pancreatitis attack, she had hung her laundry, said her son, Joe Roberts of Fort Thomas.

"She was very strong individual, " he said.

Mrs. Roberts died Thursday at St. Luke East. She was 91.

His mother tried to instill the self reliance that was her credo throughout her life in her children, Joe Roberts said.

"If she had a choice between her boys coming home with all A's on their report cards or beating the snot out of somebody who had called them `hillbillies, ' she chose the latter, " he said. "She believed in standing up for yourself."

She was a cradle Catholic, but she was born and raised in a place where Catholics were few and far between -- Lee County.

The local priest said Mass in her family's home in Bellepointe -- a Kentucky River community that no longer exists -- because there was no church there, and sat in one room to hear confessions from penitents in the next room through a crack in the door, Joe Roberts said.

Mrs. Roberts and her husband, Amster, who died in 1978, moved to Fort Thomas after he joined the Army and was assigned to establish a draft induction center at the old Army post there during World War II.

She began attending St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas more than 60 years ago, before the parish even had a church building and Mass was said in the school, her son said.

She had a mastectomy 26 years ago, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. About the only concession she made to that ordeal was giving up bowling in a church league.

"On the way home from the hospital, she said, `It's over, '" Joe Roberts said. When he asked her what she meant, she replied: "I've cried a little, I've grieved. I'm going on with my life."

She was a member of Club 55 and the Mother's Club at St. Thomas, Southgate Senior Citizens and Highland Heights Senior Citizens.
