Rev. Stanley Tillman, taught 30 years at XU
The Rev. Stanley Tillman, a Newport native who taught philosophy at Xavier University for nearly 30 years, had a reputation for being a bit of a bulldog, a natural teacher who filled the classroom with his personality.
He was "an excellent teacher who engaged his students directly and personally, " said the Rev. Frank Oppenheim, who teaches philosophy at Xavier now. "He challenged students to meet deep questions and think about them. His personality was all over the room. Pedagogy was his gift."
Another of Rev. Tillman's Xavier colleagues, the Rev. Hank Kenney, was struck by his enthusiasm for life.
"He had great passion for whatever he taught. If it was Thomas Aquinas, then nothing bigger or better could come down the pike, " Kenney said.
"He had the same passion for the students he taught and for the parishes he served in his declining years. He always saw the sunny side of things and the good in people."
The Rev. Tillman died Thursday at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 88.
He attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and entered the Society of Jesus soon after his graduation in 1932. He graduated from Xavier with degrees in Greek, Latin and English in 1937 and earned a master's degree in Greek at Loyola University in 1942. Ordained in West Baden, Ind., in 1945, he gathered a Ph.D. in philosophy from St. Louis University in 1954.
He was invited to teach philosophy at Mundelein Seminary in Illinois in 1947, then joined the faculty at Xavier six years later, where he was appointed chairman of the philosophy department in 1954. He left for Loyola's Chicago campus in 1962, taught there for two years and spent two more years at Loyola's Rome Center, before returning to Xavier in 1966.
At Xavier, Ft. Tillman organized a series of summer retreats to the Holy Land for Jesuit priests and brothers that went on for more than 10 years.
After retiring from Xavier in 1985, he moved to Murray, and served as pastor at St. Leo Church, as well as campus minister at Murray State University. In 1992, he took over as administrator of St. Gregory's parish in Barbourville, Ky., helping to rebuild the church and surrounding buildings. In 2002, he celebrated his 70th anniversary as a Jesuit.
