William F. Smith, World War II POW
Like many World War II veterans, William F. Smith didn't like to talk about his war experiences, particularly as a prisoner of war.
Mr. Smith, 91, of Lakeside Park, who died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, spent most of the war as a POW in Germany, where he didn't have much food and was severely beaten. When he returned home after the war, he and other emaciated POWs spent five or six weeks in a West Virginia motel, gradually recovering their strength.
After the war, Mr. Smith worked in his mother's grocery store, the Smith Grocery Store at Parkway Avenue and Altamont in West Covington. He also helped manage properties that his father owned in West Covington and Ludlow. He kept working into his 80s, doing painting and mowing work after he sold the store about 12 years ago, said his godson, Michael Bell of Lancaster, Pa.
"He was probably one of the most humble men you can ever meet, " Bell said. "He will be sorely missed by a lot of people."
A member of the Kelly Furnish VFW in West Covington, Mr. Smith supported many veterans' causes financially and with his time, Bell said.
He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington, but attended the Epworth United Methodist Church in Covington.
