Monsignor Fleming, gracious priest
Monsignor W. Stanley Fleming, a former pastor at three churches in the Diocese of Covington, was known as a brilliant scholar and loving priest. Monsignor Fleming, 75, died Friday at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas. He celebrated his 50th Jubilee last year, marking half a century in the priesthood.
Born in Danville but reared in Ludlow, he studied at seminaries in Cincinnati and St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained in Rome in 1952. He earned a doctorate in moral theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He was known as a gracious man with a quick smile, said the Very Rev. Gerald Reinersman, vicar general and chancellor of the Diocese of Covington. "The keenness of his wit may have faded over the years, but his gentle demeanor and the twinkle in his eye have not diminished one bit, " Reinersman told The Messenger, the diocesan newspaper, last year.
He called Monsignor Fleming an "exemplary man of god and a model priest."
Monsignor Fleming's last assignment as pastor was St. Anthony Parish in Taylor Mill from 1986 to 1996. He called that decade the highlight of his service. He showed a genuine interest in the parish school and the children, said Elizabeth Trenkamp, who was a principal of the school.
From 1955 to 1961, he was spiritual director and professor at St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger. He served as administrator of St. Juliana Church in Martin, Ky., for two years in the early 1960s. By 1963 he was chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Covington and assistant director of the diocese's hospitals.
In 1966 he returned to Rome to serve as spiritual director of North American College. He was later director of graduate studies at the college.
In 1970, Monsignor Fleming became pastor of St. Paul Church in Florence. A year, later he was named director of the diocese's hospitals.
After his final stint in Rome, he returned to Covington in 1978 and served as rector of the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. At the cathedral he worked with the Rev. Allen Bradley, who was shot in a robbery attempt in 1984. Monsignor Fleming was the first to find Father Bradley.
"Monsignor Stanley has been a good friend over the years, " Father Bradley told the Messenger last year. "I've always admired him, looked up to him."
He was an athlete and sportsman, who especially enjoyed fishing.
