Stephen Raines, 'was just pure love'
It didn't take much to please Stephen "Greg" Raines. The Sanders resident, 36, who died Saturday at Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind., liked anything loud and noisy. He had a special fondness for those plastic fish mounted on a plaque that burst into song.
Mentally handicapped from birth, Mr. Raines was a large man -- he stood 6-foot-4 and weighed 220 pounds -- with the mind of a 4-year-old. He collected toy cars, and he exercised by pulling a little red wagon around, said his sister, Theresa S. Raines of Owenton.
He was one of four mentally handicapped children in a family of eight children, she said.
Mr. Raines worked for more than 20 years as an assembler for the North Key Community Care Workshop in Carrollton. "And of course, that was the hub of their social life, too, " his sister said.
He looked forward every year to attending Camp KYSOC, a Carrollton camp for children and adults with disabilities, disorders, spina bifida or autism.
About two years ago, while he was staying at his sister's house for the weekend, a stray dog he named "Lady" showed up. The dog became his beloved pet, someone he could feed and care for himself.
Mr. Raines also had three nephews he was crazy about, his sister said. "He was just pure love, " she said. "You have no doubt where he's at. The rest of us have to work real hard. He's got a free pass up there."
Other survivors include his mother, Anna M. Shaw Raines of Sanders; sister Christina L. Raines of Sanders; and brothers, Kevin Thomas Raines and Gary Randall Raines, both of Sanders.
