Helen 'Teri' Kinch, helped other veterans
The late Helen "Teri" Edwards Kinch came home one day in 1957 and said she was joining the Army.
"When she made her mind up to do something, she did it. Full-bore, " said her son, Vance P. Edwards of Hebron.
That commitment continued long after the former Covington resident left the Women's Army Corps in 1958.
Mrs. Kinch, 63, of Greenwood, Ind., who died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at her son's home, stayed active in veterans' groups and veterans' causes for her entire life.
The American Legion Auxiliary member visited hospitals, pushed paperwork, organized committees, helped with congressional testimony, did letter-writing campaigns. She volunteered often for the Disabled American Veterans.
She did anything she could do to help increase awareness of the role women have played in the military, her son said.
Even when she traveled, which she loved to do, she arranged her trips around the military bases where she would stay, her son said.
She worked for the IRS for 12 years, including about 10 years in Covington, then worked for the American Legion National Headquarters in Indianapolis.
One of her duties there was to re-create documents that were lost or worn, complete with traced signatures of dead Legion leaders. Her son said he loved to tease her about being a forger.
He said after her death, he had received about 40 calls Tuesday from veterans and Legion members whom his mother had helped.
"It makes me feel good that she really made a difference to people, " he said.
