Margaret Keiley, always did the job the right way
Margaret Lemker Keiley believed if something was going to be done, there was a proper way to do it.
So when Mrs. Keiley was an elevator operator at the old McAlpin's store in downtown Cincinnati, she stood all day instead of periodically resting on the stool that the elevator was equipped with.
When she was later a garment inspector at the old Heinlein's shirt factory in Cincinnati, she insisted that every shirt that went through her hands be up to standard, with no extraneous threads or defects.
And when she volunteered to run parish festivals at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, she made sure they were well organized and adequately staffed.
Mrs. Keiley, who died Tuesday afternoon at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas, "believed that if she had a job to do, she'd do it right, " said her daughter, Margaret Moreno of Kenwood, Ohio. Mrs. Keiley, formerly of Covington, was 93.
Mrs. Keiley worked most of her adult life, but found time to volunteer at the Cathedral, where she was a lifelong member.
In addition to her work on the festivals, she was very active in the Legion of Mary.
"She would visit with people, sit with the sick, " said Moreno. "I remember she worked with a family whose daughter later died of leukemia. She would go stay with the girl so her family could get out."
She was also a member of the Ladies Society at the Cathedral.
She moved to Carmel Manor about three years ago. All morning there Tuesday, as word spread that she was dying, staff members hurried in to kiss her good-bye.
"It was a real tribute, " Moreno said. "I never realized how many lives she touched."
Mrs. Keiley's husband, George Keiley, died in 1987.
Also surviving are another daughter, Judith Reilly of Ryland Heights; nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
