Barr Manter, 72, liked to work with his hands
For most of his life, Barr Donald Manter's hands were busy.
He learned to draw in college, and used his skill to do house plans, including the one for his home in Independence.
Mr. Manter, who died Wednesday at age 72 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, bought a farm in Independence in 1969 and became a full-time farmer.
He built birdhouses and feeders for the bluebirds.
He learned how to artificially inseminate cows, and did that for many other local farmers, said his widow, Marie Pagliaminto Manter.
When he got the farm running smoothly, in 1978, he told his wife he was getting lonely. She suggested he get his real estate license, which he did.
He worked as a Realtor for more than 20 years. He continued to farm part-time until 1986, and he also served on the board of directors of the Kentucky Farm Bureau and as president of the Taylor Mill Boosters.
He often gave free advice to people who wanted to start farming, or who wanted to buy real estate.
It was Lou Gehrig's disease that finally stilled Mr. Manter's hands.
The disease left his arms useless, his wife said, "which was a horrible thing for a man who put his hands to such good use."
