George Merz, was there for his kids
George W. Merz, longtime accountant with Hatfield Coal, died at 3 p.m. Thursday at his home in Covington.
He was 76.
Mr. Merz had worked for Hatfield Coal Co. for 25 years. For many of those years he also held a second job as a key cutter for Sears.
"He worked two jobs do the best for his family, " said his son, George "Bud" Merz of Covington. "He sent both kids to private schools."
As a young man, Mr. Merz went to night school at Xavier University to get his degree.
"He was the only one in his family to go to college, " his son said. "He was a simple man who was never in the limelight."
He worked hard but managed to attend school programs with his children.
"My father always made sure he was there for us kids, " his son said. "He had a strong work ethic and a sense of fairness."
He was a member of the third Order of St. Francis and a member of the Cathedral parish in Covington. He enjoyed reading and music and at one time considered being a pilot.
"He took private flight lessons, " his son said.
His first wife, Betty Kohl Merz, died in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Merz; a daughter Mary Elizabeth Owens of Covington; a son, George Albert "Bud" Merz of Covington; a brother, William "Skip" Merz of Lebanon, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Stanley Mason Askin, 89, of Cincinnati, died Friday at Harrison House, Cincinnati.
He was a farmer and a member of Belmont Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery, Brooksville.

Ida Baker, 89, of Butler, died Friday at the St Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of the New Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church, Newport. Her husband, Melvin Baker, and a daughter, Julie Ellen Baker, both preceded her in death.
She is survived by sons, Monroe Baker of Butler and Carl Baker of Fort Thomas; and sisters, Ollie Bowling and Deltha Turner, both of Butler, Martha Herald of Wilder, Georgia Deaton of Franklin Ohio and Nancy Combs of Newport.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Annette Lynn Neaves Bradford, 38, of Erlanger, died Thursday at a friend's home in Erlanger.
She was a housekeeper at Comfort Inn, Erlanger.
Survivors include her husband, James Hunter; daughters, Nicki Kincaid of Fort Thomas, Natasha Kincaid of Cincinnati and Jena Beagle of Crittenden; a son, Ryan Beagle of Crittenden; mother, Kathy Garber of Minor Hill, Tenn.; father, Larry Neaves of McDaniels; sisters, Timi Aromola of Hebron, Angela Fibbe of Petersburg, Stephanie Garber of New Albany, Ind., and Melissa Pappas and Lori Marks, both of Independence; and brothers, Scott Neaves of Independence, Mark Neaves of Minor Hill and Chris Collins of Beattyville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation begins at noon Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Lynn Hambrick, 36, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was disabled and a former student at Riverside Rehabilitation Center.
Survivors include brothers, Lester Hambrick of Cincinnati, Lawrence Hambrick of Ludlow and Kenneth Hambrick of Newport; and sisters, Michele Hambrick, Sabina Hambrick, Bobbie Conrad-Fann and Geraldine Golsby, all of Covington, Flora Tevis of Latonia and Silver Johnson of Newport.
Services were Friday at Second Baptist Church, Newport. Burial will be at 11 a.m. today in Mary Smith Cemetery, Elsmere.

Dorothy H. Harden, 90, of Newport, died Wednesday at the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
She was a retired seamstress for Fetcheimer's, Cincinnati. Her husband, Carroll Harden, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, David Harden of Louisville; sisters, Lou Ann Toppin of Alexandria and Ruth Linville of Highland Heights; and a brother, Ralph Hoffman of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Barr Donald Manter, 72, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a farmer and former owner of Barr Realty, past president of Taylor Mill Boosters, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Board of Realtors.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Pagliaminto Manter; sons, Stephen Wayne Manter of Florence and Barr Michael Manter of Independence; a sister, Patricia Harden of Boone County; a brother, George Manter of Jacksonville, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.
Constance J. McKinney, 75, of Florence, formerly of Frankfort, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence V. McKinney Jr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Landon E. McKinney of Erlanger; and three grandchildren.

Charlie J. O'Donnell, 61, of Costa Mesa, Calif., formerly of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Orange County, Calif.
He was a manager at Balboa Boats.
Survivors include a son, David S. O'Donnell of Hamilton, Ohio; brothers, Jim O'Donnell of Omaha, Neb., and Tom O'Donnell of Erlanger; and sisters, Nancy Lautterwasser of Ludlow and Susan Baker of Union.

Anna R. Ostermeyer, 83, of Bellevue, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Her husband, Raymond Ostermeyer, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, William Ostermeyer of Cincinnati; and a sister, Clara Schnabel of Cincinnati.

Elsie May Mofford Perkins, 93, of Brooksville, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday at Harrison Memorial Health Care Center, Cynthiana.
She was a homemaker and a member of Johnsville United Methodist Church and Bracken County Seniors. Her husband, Charlie L. Perkins, died in 1988, and her sons, Charles Perkins and Gerald Perkins, and a daughter, Naomi King, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Graves of Brooksville, and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery, Foster.
Jeanne Trump Phister, 81, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a retired stewardess with TWA and a member of Hyde Park Methodist Church, Cincinnati. Her husband, Joseph Phister Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Cook of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a son, Joseph Phister Jr. of Fort Thomas; and two grandchildren.
Private services will be held for the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Infant Nora Margaret Krieg Richmond, of Dayton, died Wednesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her parents, Catherine and Jimmy Richmond of Dayton; a brother, Zachary Richmond at home; maternal grandparents, Mary Ann and Jim Krieg of Dayton; paternal grandparents, Debra and Greg Richmond of Wilder; and great-grandmothers, Mary Krieg of Dayton and Jackie Reuter of Highland Heights.

Carl Wilson, 72, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired maintenance worker for the U.S. Postal Service and was retired from the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Jill Wilson; a son, Marvin Wilson of Cincinnati, a daughter, Tina King of Noblesville, Ind.; a sister, Aileen Foster of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.
