'Earline' Hughes, 80, owned taxi companies
Velma "Earline" Hughes Ward, 80, of Fort Thomas, a retired owner and operator of taxi cab companies in Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at Hospice of Blue Ash.
She and her late husband, James R. Ward, who died in 1986, bought Bellevue Cab Co. in 1961 and then bought Westside Baber Cab Co. of Newport in 1965.
Mrs. Ward left the cab business in the late 1970s and her two sons continued it until the end of 2001.
"It was a tough business for a lady to be in, but she enjoyed it, especially the customers that we served, " said Mrs. Ward's son, Carl Ward of Southgate.
"She was a hard worker and you had to be in the cab business because it was 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
Mrs. Ward did everything but drive the cabs.
"She took care of the business side of it, " said Carl Ward. "She not only would handle the finances, but also do some dispatching when it needed to be done. She was devoted to the family business."
Originally from eastern Kentucky, Mrs. Ward came to Northern Kentucky after she was graduated from high school in 1940 at the invitation of friends living in the area.
She was employed as a waitress at the Omni Netherland hotel in Cincinnati and worked on the family farm before the cab business abruptly came her way in 1961.
"One day dad came home and said, 'We bought a cab company, "' said Carl Ward. "He didn't say he was thinking about buying one. He said that we had bought one.
"Dad worked in a factory and when he would be laid off he would drive a cab until he got called back to the factory. One day when a cab company was up for sale, he decided to buy it.
"It started a whole new way of life for the family."
