Jack Sogar, veteran, radiator business owner
Two days before he died, Jack L. Sogar celebrated his 83rd birthday with dinner at the home of his son, Gary Sogar, in Florence.
It was a simple meal of roast beef and potatoes, the kind of fare that Mr. Sogar loved.
"That's my last memory of him, and it's a good one, " Gary Sogar said.
Mr. Sogar died Tuesday at his home in Erlanger.
Most people knew him through the business he ran for 30 years, Sogar's Auto Radiator, which he inherited from his father. Its last address was 209 Johnson St. in Covington.
His former employees bought it, and renamed it Covington Auto Radiator.
Mr. Sogar lunched every day with judges, lawyers and other garage owners.
"It was almost a family of them that went to lunch at various places, " his son said. "I guess he repaired their cars."During World War II, Mr. Sogar served in the Navy on an LST in the Pacific. The initials stand for "landing ship tank, " but the sailors joked that they more appropriately indicated "low, slow target."
He fought in seven battles, including the battle of the Coral Sea, his son said.
His military service was one of the things he was most proud of, Gary Sogar said.
Other survivors include his wife, Pat Sogar; a daughter, Judy Hanes of Park Hills; and a sister, Kay Fish of Bellevue.
