Betty Race, was airport housekeeping supervisor
Betty Ann Race, 69, of Florence, retired supervisor of housekeeping at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, died Monday of cancer at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
Mrs. Race was active in the Fraternal Order of Police and the Kentucky Peace Officers Association because her late husband, William Carl Race, was a Fort Mitchell police officer and an airport security guard.
She also was a Kentucky Colonel.
Mrs. Race retired from the airport two years ago after working there more than 30 years.
"The airport officials didn't want her to leave because she had done such a good job there, " said Mrs. Race's son, John Mitts of Crittenden. "She agreed to stay on another year after she first retired.
"As the airport grew larger over the years, her responsibility got a lot bigger. She was really respected for what she did and they had a difficult time replacing her."
Mrs. Race liked to spend her free time making quilts and painting ceramics. She also loved country music and was a fan of George Jones. She and her husband enjoyed camping.
"I think she enjoyed her work at the airport so much because she had so many friends there, " said Mitts. "If you met her, you loved her."
