Helen W. Winterberg, avid reader, came to U.S. in '48
Helen W. Winterberg loved to read about current events and history.
The 78-year-old Crescent Springs resident, who died Sunday at her daughter's home in Fort Mitchell, was born in 1924 in a city full of history -- Vienna, Austria.
Then known as Helen Deimel, she met and married
I.F. "Bud" Winterberg, an American soldier, and came to America in 1948 when she was 28.
She read both local newspapers from front to back every day, said her daughter, Peggy Kinsella of Fort Mitchell. She even asked family members to bring her newspapers from out of town when they traveled.
The avid reader had two rooms full of books in her Crescent Springs home.
Her lifelong interest in politics led to a seat on the Fort Mitchell Postal Board and a seat on the Crescent Springs City Council from 1996 to 2000. She worked hard on getting the city a park, her daughter said, and visited many parks across the state to help with that.
She was active in the Covington Art Club, the Fort Mitchell Garden Club and the St. Joseph Church senior citizens group, "The Happy Timers." She played bridge with her friends in those groups as well.
She also served as a cook at St. Pius X Church rectory in Edgewood.
