Sandra Whittington, apartment manager

Sandra Whittington showed grace and strength in the most trying times of her life, and never more so than when her life was drawing to a close.

"It was amazing. She was this little tiny person, tiny, " said her sister, Sharyn Hughes of Fort Mitchell. "But she was so strong. She never complained, not once. I don't know if I would have the grace to go the way she did."

Mrs. Whittington, 52, the manager of the Skyline Apartments in Covington, died Wednesday after an extended battle with cancer. Diagnosed more than a year ago, she had gone for a checkup in October. Doctors found her cancer had spread, and there wasn't much time left.

With the time she had, she doted on family, second nature to her. She also made an effort to come to terms with her spirituality, working with pastors from both Latonia Christian Church and First Church of Christ in Florence. According to her sister, Mrs. Whittington wasn't getting involved just to get her house in order -- she was seeking real answers.

"She was finding her way back to God. She wasn't involved just to be a member of a church. She was involved in the walk, the ministry, " Mrs. Hughes said.

Her effect on others was remarkable. Family members were considering taking her out of the hospital and putting her into hospice care, but nurses at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, who had come to know Mrs. Whittington well, prevailed on the family to let her stay there so they could continue taking care of her. She died in the hospital.
