Mary McCafferty Rice, 'defender of the faith'
Mary McCafferty Rice, 94, of Lakeside Park, active in many Catholic church organizations and charities, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She was a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington and Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and a founding member of both the St. Gemma Guild and the Thomas More College Ladies Auxiliary.
She also was a member of the Garden Guild at the cathedral, the Blessed Sacrament Church Ladies Society and Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites.
"She was a real defender of the faith, " said Mrs. Rice's daughter, Mary Claire Rice of Lakeside Park. "She had a lot of trust and love in God.
"She was always doing something for someone else. She did a lot of charitable work. If she saw a cause, she got involved in it. She felt that if she could help someone, that was the most important thing to do."
Mary Claire Rice recalled when her mother learned that people in the mountains of Kentucky needed sewing machines.
"Not just any kind of sewing machines, but pedal sewing machines because they didn't have electricity in the mountains, " she noted. "So, mom had us running all over town collecting pedal sewing machines to send to the mountains.
"When the Passionists nuns first came to the area, mom organized the St. Gemma Guild to raise money so the nuns could purchase household items they needed. She had Christmas parties every year to help the nuns."
Mary Claire Rice said her mother's strong faith "stemmed from her home life as a young girl. And she passed that faith on to her children. We all have strong faith, too."
