Robert Horan, executive, involved in youth sports
Robert Thomas Horan Sr. was an insurance industry executive who coached youth baseball and raised money for the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
He was risk management director for Griffin Industries in Cold Spring and also worked for Snydor-Enos Insurance Co. and Pendery Risk Management, both of Fort Thomas, as well as for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
Mr. Horan was a Campbell County Knothole League coach and helped found the Fort Thomas Junior Baseball League. He was active in the Juvenile Diabetes Association, helping to start the local chapter, and was instrumental in its fund-raisers. He also was a member of the Fort Thomas Lions Club.
Mr. Horan, 79, of Cold Spring, died Tuesday at Hospice of Northern Kentucky in Fort Thomas.
"When he coached Knothole baseball, he saw it was highly competitive, and a lot of kids didn't get to play, so he and others set up the Fort Thomas Junior Baseball League, which had a rule that every child got to play in every game, " said Mr. Horan's son, Thomas Horan Jr., of Wilder.
"He got very involved in the Juvenile Diabetes Association because the child of one of his business associates had diabetes. Starting at age 56 and continuing until he was 73, he rode 60 miles every year in a bike-a-thon fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Over that time, he raised close to $50, 000 for the association."
Mr. Horan also played Santa Claus at Christmas time for church organizations.
As a hobby, he enjoyed being a "gentleman farmer" in Cold Spring, with a big garden and an orchard with lots of fruit trees. He also had a small vineyard and made homemade wine, which he liked to give to friends.
