John 'Babe' Schmidt, 82, loved golf 'more than life'

John A. "Babe" Schmidt, 82, of Fort Thomas, loved to play golf -- "more than life, " said his widow, Marcia Schmidt.

When the Campbell County Golf Course opened, Mr. Schmidt was its first club champion. In his prime, he shot in the low 70s.

Mr. Schmidt, who died Friday at his home, was also inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame for his baseball prowess.

It was his athletic ability that attracted his future wife to him when they met on a blind date.

"The fact that he was a sportsman appealed to me, " Mrs. Schmidt said. "I can't even catch a baseball."

Mr. Schmidt was a retired milkman for the Cloverleaf and Meyer dairies. Between his milk routes and the golf course, he knew everyone around, his widow said. "He was very personable. He always had a smile for everybody, " she said.

Mr. Schmidt was also a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Newport, Retired Men's Club and Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include daughters, Tamra Schmitt of Burlington, and Gayla Holmer of West Chester, Ohio; a brother, Rudolph Schmidt of Lake Placid, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ, Park Ave. and Nelson Place, Newport, Ky. 41071.

Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

James Burkhart, 72, of Corbin, formerly of Latonia, died Saturday at his daughter's home in Independence. He was a retired coal miner with Peabody Coal Co. His first wife, Juanita Burkhart, died in 1991. His second wife, Betty Burkhart, died June 6.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy Burkhart of Independence; daughters, Judy Lloyd of Florence, Joan Cain of Independence and Jeannie Ely of Erlanger; stepsons, Ed Clem of Caywood and Wayne Cain of Corbin; a stepdaughter, Gail Bryant of Somerset; a brother, Walter Burkhart Jr. of Williamsburg; sisters, Katherine Thomas of Corbin, Susie Stokes and Myrtle Shackelford, both of Mount Vernon, Helen Gilbert of Lily and Connie Burkhart of Harlan; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Charity Tabernacle Pentecostal Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is handling arrangements.

Stewart Wayne Davenport, 33, of Ludlow, died at 6 p.m. Friday in an auto accident at U.S. 50 and Lawrenceburg Road, Cincinnati. He was a boilermaker with Boilermaker's Union Local No. 105, Cincinnati, and a member of First Baptist Church, Ludlow.

Survivors include sons, Justin Waddell and Matthew Davenport, both of Independence; a daughter, Clara Davenport of Fort Wright; his parents, H. Wayne and Carl Turner Davenport of Ludlow; a brother, Jason Davenport of Bellevue; a sister, Sanday "Sissy" Wright of Verona; and grandmother, Ethel Davenport of Lebanon, Tenn.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Allie Mae Gilbert Davis, 80, of Taylor Mill, died at 6 a.m. Saturday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.

She was a nurse's aide with St. Charles Care Center, Covington. A son, Dean Davis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Davis; daughters, Barbara Whitt of Crittenden, Glenda Keel of Covington and Myrtle Davidson of Burlington; sons, William Davis of Florence and Jerry Davis of Oklahoma; a brother, Billy Gilbert of Erlanger; sisters, Mildred Beal of Birmingham, Ala., Dorothy England of Middlesboro, Genieve Mobley of Cincinnati and Myrtle Murphy of Osgood, Ind.; 30 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Allie Mae Davis Memorial Fund, in care of any Fifth Third Bank in Northern Kentucky.

Grace Lee Floyd, 76, of Ludlow, died Saturday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Emma A. Kremer Birkenhauer Happe, 82, of Newport, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at her home.

She was a retired factory worker with Kenner Co., and a member of Holy Spirit Church in Newport, Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 Women's Auxiliary and Senior Citizens of Southgate.

Her first husband, Robert A. Birkenhauer, died in 1975.

Her second husband, Louis Happe, died in 1994.

Survivors include sons, Robert W. Birkenhauer of Bayonet Point, Fla., and M.J. "Doc" Birkenhauer of Southgate; daughters, Barbara A. Burton of Middleton, Tenn., Betty J. Haas of Fort Thomas, Joan B. Witte of Collierville, Tenn., Sandy Kuhl of Newport and Donna King of Villa Hills; brothers, William Kremer of Highland Heights and Albert Kremer of Newport; a sister, Tillie Staubach of Newport; 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.

Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Margaret Massa, 90, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Saturday at Hillebrand Nursing Center, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Bertha Ann McKenney, 82, of Walton, died at 6:32 p.m. Dec. 15 at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired nurse with Speers Hospital and a private-care nurse.

Survivors include daughters, Carol Landrum of Falmouth and Linda Larison of Walton; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial was in Alexandria Cemetery.

Kathleen I. Miller, 62, of Erlanger, died at 4:10 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was an employee of H&R; Block Premium, Crescent Springs, and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Miller; a son, Michael Miller of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Victoria Duzmal of Destrehan, La.; a sister, Margaret Tally of Yuma, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

No services are planned. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Frank Finley Neace, 68, of California, died Friday at his home. He was a building contractor and a member of Keturah Street Church of God, Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Finley; daughters, Sandra Kay Barnes of Alexandria and Laura Diane Barnes of Alexandria; brothers, Jack Neace, James Neace and Matt Neace, all of Wilder, Rodney Neace of Portsmouth, Ohio, Willard Neace of Florence and Robert Neace and Harlan Neace, both of Newport; sisters, Juanita Jackson of Covington, Jean Russ of Alexandria and Elizabeth Jones of Newport; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Keturah Street Church of God, Newport. Visitation will from 5 to 9 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Josephine Reimer, 95, of Taylor Mill, died at 4:05 p.m. Saturday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw.

She was a retired teacher with Newport Schools, and retired from A.D. Owens School. She was a member of Gertrude Chapter No. 19 Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Carl Reimer, died in 1967. There are no immediate survivors.

Services will be at 7 tonight at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Gallatin Health Care Center, P.O. Box 128, Warsaw, Ky. 41095.

Holten Allen Smith, 80, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cynthiana and Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438, and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Kearns Smith; and a brother, Frank D. Smith of Miamisburg, Ohio.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, 302 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Gloria Steger, 78, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a World War II Navy veteran, former receptionist at the Fifth Third Bank, Newport, and a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Foreseyth of Union and Susan Poston of Burlington; sons David Steger of Burlington and Doug Steger of Covington; a sister Lois Stivers of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, is handling the charge of arrangements.

Dennis Allen Stewart, 54, of Dry Ridge, died at 2:10 a.m. Saturday at his home.

He was a former terminal manager with Stewart Trucklines, Cincinnati, a member of Walton-Verona Lodge No. 719 F&AM, a past master of Verona Lodge No. 876 F&AM and a former member of the Dry Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Marieda Keeton Stewart; daughters, Denise Burton and Deonza Stewart, both of Dry Ridge; his father and stepmother, William Allen and Barbara Stewart of Dry Ridge; a sister, Lisa Stewart of Florence; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Mark J. Stockmeyer, 44, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Louise Verax, 70, of Newport, died Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Campbell of Milford, Ohio; sons, William Verax of Alexandria and Donald Verax of Cincinnati; stepsons, Ed Verax of Fontana, Calif., Charles Verax of Brooksville and Harry Verax of Apple Valley, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Helen Herald of Newport; a sister, Ellen O'Connell of Covington; 32 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Alberta Hulker Whaley, 74, of Verona, died Saturday at Batavia, Ohio, Nursing and Convalescent Center. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Floyd Whaley, died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Webster of Independence; sons, Denver Whaley of Walton and Sam Whaley of Burlington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at noon.

Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.
