Robert Thomas Jr., founded 911 mapping technology firm

Robert Graham "Robbie" Thomas Jr., who started 911 Mapping Systems in Florence and built it into a nationally known supplier of public safety software, died Sunday in Palm Springs, Calif., where he lived. He was formerly from Bellevue.

Mr. Thomas founded his company in Florence in 1992, taking digital mapping techniques and applying them to the public safety field to provide emergency dispatching agencies with the technical ability to determine the location of callers.

"He was a design leader. He virtually invented that technology, " said his brother, Michael Thomas of Fort Thomas, who worked in the business with him.

About six years ago, Mr. Thomas foresaw the need for 911 centers to trace calls from cell phones. His company had begun supplying that technology to dispatching agencies in the past year, with 50 on board and another 50 planned to be added in the coming year, Michael Thomas said.

Mr. Thomas was also the driving force behind marketing his company's product.

"He was a dynamic personality. He could make you think it was daytime when it was night, " said Mr. Thomas' son, Aaron, of Fort Thomas.

"He was a charismatic individual, " said Michael Thomas. "Nobody who ever met him forgot him. He could make anyone excited about what he was excited about."

Mr. Thomas grew up in Bellevue and was a three-sport star at Bellevue High School. He graduated from Xavier University, which he attended on a tennis scholarship, in 1970 and the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill., in 1976. He practiced as a chiropractor before going into business.

He moved to Palm Springs about three years ago so he could play golf year round, and became a scratch golfer.

Mr. Thomas had an adverse reaction to an asthma attack he suffered Sunday and went into cardiac arrest, his son said.
