Wanda Scanlon, 81, hospital volunteer
Friends and family say Wanda Lee Scanlon had a smile that could light up a room.
Ms. Scanlon spread that light as a volunteer at the St. Elizabeth Medical centers, working about 16 hours a week helping with outpatient registration and various other jobs.
"She really loved helping the people at the hospital, " said Lesley Bishop, a daughter from Covington. "She was graceful and had a real sense of class."
Mrs. Scanlon, 81, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was a former owner of Scanlon Drugs and a member of the American Business Women's Association. Her husband, Joseph Scanlon, preceded her in death. Mrs. Scanlon and her husband for a time owned four drug stores in Northern Kentucky. She usually worked in the cosmetics section.
To cope with the pressures of the business and keeping up with her community activities, Mrs. Scanlon took up running. Even into her 70s, her mother would run an average of five miles six days a week, Bishop said.
A voracious reader, Mrs. Scanlon read the paper each day and was fond of books, especially autobiographies and those about history. It was her studious nature that led her to the business women's association, for which she helped raise money for annual scholarships.
"She was a person with a lot of love to give, " Bishop said. "She had a very positive effect on people."
