Lloyd `Rudy' Wells, 80, was civic-minded

Lloyd Allan "Rudy" Wells was a civic-minded man in a community that no longer exists.

Mr. Wells, who died Thursday at his home in Taylor Mill at age 80, was a founding member and assistant fire chief for the Winston Park Volunteer Fire Department.

He helped mix the mortar and lay the block for the fire station on Winston Avenue, which is now part of Taylor Mill, said his son, Richard A. Wells of Latonia.

Something the Winston Park City Council did made Mr. Wells so mad that he decided to run for the council and change it -- and he did, said his son.

Mr. Wells served on the council and also on the Taylor Mill City Council, after Winston Park became part of Taylor Mill in the early 1970s.

When he wasn't working as a conductor/switchman for ConRail, where he retired after 43 years, he was involved with children, as an assistant scoutmaster or a Little League baseball coach, his son said.

He had a special pair of pliers that he used to pull out loose teeth for neighborhood children, his son said.

He also enjoyed owning and racing horses. His best horse, named Boiling Over, did better the colder the weather.

"If you met him, you either liked him or hated him, " Richard said. "He was very well liked."

Mr. Wells was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia, Antique Auto Club and American Legion Post No. 203. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
