Barbara Ann Keene made home warm, fun for kids
Barbara Ann Schevene Wulfeck Keene made her Lakeside Park home the kind of place that all the neighborhood children felt welcome in.
"She made it so that our home was a warm place and a fun place, " said her daughter, Debbie Amareno of Monfort Heights. "It was the house in the neighborhood where all the children could feel safe and secure."
Ms. Keene, who died Wednesday at age 66 at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, would organize backyard carnivals every summer, with the goal of raising $200 for charity.
The pond behind her home became a magnet for neighborhood children, who skated on it in the winter and fished in it during the summer.
She taught all four of her children to ice skate, Amareno said.
"She was a very kind and caring woman, " Amareno said. "She was considered mom to many in our neighborhood."
Later in life, after a divorce, Ms. Keene worked as a bartender, then with a janitorial company.
She loved to fish, and normally spent two weeks every summer at Dale Hollow Lake, fishing and getting a suntan, her daughter said.
