Jerry Finn, toy shop owner, bookmaker and pool hall hustler
Jerry Finn was a hustler.
When he owned and operated the Pike Street Toy Shop in Covington, he sold toys out of the front of the business and ran a bookmaking operation and card games in the back, said his son, Mark Finn of Florence.
When the shop closed, Mr. Finn took his bookmaking operation on the road, following racing meets across Kentucky and the country.
When he wasn't taking bets, he was playing billiards - for money.
"He was like Paul Newman, " Mark Finn said. "He'd string somebody along, but he knew that he could beat them. And he did."
Mr. Finn of Florence died Tuesday at 1:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was 68.
In retirement, Mr. Finn liked to play in a daily gin game at World of Sports in Florence and spend time with his grandchildren.
"He'd watch my kids while I was playing ball at Boone Woods, " Mark Finn said. "When the game would end, I couldn't find him for an hour because he'd taken them for a hike."
Diagnosed with liver cancer three weeks ago, Mr. Finn got off his death bed four times to insist that he was still ready to go, his son said.
"He was still trying to prove something to us even then, " Mark Finn said.
Mr. Finn was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Florence.
