Marlene Schroder, care-giver, listener
She left the religious life after only five years, but Marlene Lucia Schroder never stopped caring for people.
Ms. Schroder, 62, who died Sunday at her home, became Sister Sandra at age 17.
While a nun, she taught at St. Joseph School in Crescent Springs and at St. Benedict School in Covington.
She left the convent because she wanted to pursue a new vocation, said her brother, Wil Schroder of Fort Mitchell.
"At that time, everyone was being taught to be a teacher, and she really wanted to be a nurse, " he said.
She enrolled in nursing school at Mount St. Joseph College and graduated with her RN three years later. She worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati for about a year, and then joined the Air Force in the late 1960s.
After about a year in the service, she learned she had acromegaly, a hormone disorder that produces excessive growth.
Her features became more masculine and her body bulkier, her brother said.
An operation to remove a tumor on her pituitary glad corrected some of the disfigurement, but not all, her brother said.
"They told her she would only live to be 40 or 45, " he said. "She was on borrowed time for a long time, and she knew it.
"She lived without complaining, and she lived it to the fullest."
After a medical discharge from the Air Force, Ms. Schroder returned to Fort Mitchell, where she worked a variety of jobs.
She taught English to immigrants with Traveler's Aid in Cincinnati, and she worked as a tax clerk for the Kenton County sheriff.
She earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Cincinnati, but never put it to use, continuing to work for the sheriff and to teach English to foreign students.
Retired for the past 8 to 10 years, she spent most of her time seeing after her parents and her nieces and nephews.
As the oldest of 11 children, she took the responsibility to take care of everyone, her brother said.
"She was very even tempered, " he said. "She would listen a lot."
Other survivors include her parents, Wilfrid R. and Magdalen Arlinghaus Schroder of Fort Mitchell; sisters, Gail Rider of Boone County, Penny Dietrick of Schaumburg, Ill., Lana Rutterer and Laurie Kuhlman, both of Fort Mitchell, and Melanie Boone of Taylor Mill; and brothers, Urban Schroder and Roger Schroder, both of Fort Mitchell, Robert Schroder of Edgewood and Jeff Schroder of Chatham, N.J.
