Richard Depenbrock, 70, motor coach enthusiast
In 17 years traveling in their motor coaches, Richard Depenbrock and his wife, Arlene, made hundreds of friends around the country.
When Mr. Depenbrock, of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, his wife began hearing from them.
"You cannot believe the people from out of state who have called after seeing this on the Internet, " Mrs. Depenbrock said Thursday.
The Depenbrocks belonged to two motor coach groups, the Kentuckiana Traveliers and the Tri-State Traveliers, and regularly went to local, regional and national rallies with them. Their trips took them to California, Boston, Canada and all sorts of places in between.
They were on the road as recently as two weeks ago with a jaunt to Frankfort, even though Mr. Depenbrock had been slowed recently by heart problems and cancer.
"He liked driving the rig. He liked seeing his friends and playing golf with them, " Mrs. Depenbrock said of her husband, who was 70.
Mr. Depenbrock also worked on their motor coach, which came naturally to him because he was a longtime auto mechanic. He operated Dick's Sunoco for about 15 years in the 1960s and '70s and then worked for Escue Pontiac in Covington, specializing in foreign cars.
"He saw when he had the station that foreign cars were coming in, so he got into those, " his wife said. "He was one of the best mechanics in Ludlow when he had the station there."
Mr. Depenbrock, who retired at age 52 the first time, later worked as a monitor on buses transporting handicapped students in the Beechwood school system.
"He was a very good family man, a very gentle man, " Mrs. Depenbrock said. "In 44 years of marriage, he never raised his voice to me."
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
