Harold Bryant, former XU department chair
Harold L. "Hal" Bryant, former chairman of the Xavier University Department of Economics, died Tuesday of brain cancer. He was 67.
Dr. Bryant died at the Primrose Place Health Center in Springfield, Mo. He moved to Missouri in 1998, where he farmed in Niangua and raised purebred Tarentaise cattle.
He developed his love of farming in Kentucky, where he and his wife, Ann, had a cattle farm in California from 1989 until they moved to Missouri.
"We were city slickers. We had a lot to learn, " Ann Bryant said. "He fell in love with farming. If he had any free time he was clearing land or working the animals."
He was born in Somerset in 1934 but moved to Cincinnati, where he was graduated from Hughes High in 1954. He then spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Turkey and North Africa and returned to begin studies at the University of Cincinnati, from which he earned a bachelor's degree in geology, master's degrees in economics and community planning and a Ph.D. in economics.
While in school, he supported his family working as a meat cutter at Kroger and teaching classes as a graduate assistant.
"He was a constant teacher and mentor with everyone he came in contact with, " his wife said.
Dr. Bryant reveled in tackling new projects.
From the mid 1970s to the late 1980s he was co-owner of The Window Garden restaurants in Hyde Park and Western Hills in Cincinnati. "He was quite an entrepreneur, " his wife said. "He was teaching full time, but he wanted to have a business, too."
He also worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a forensic economist, opening his own consulting business in Fort Thomas in the 1980s. He continued his consulting business when he moved to the Kentucky farm and in Missouri.
He was diagnosed with multiple brain tumors last December.
