Dixie Bihl, jewelry store owner
Dixie Jean Bihl, retired co-owner of Bihl Brothers Jewelers in Newport, died at 1:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was 72.
Mrs. Bihl, of Melbourne, worked side by side with her husband, Ira "Buzz" Bihl, for 30 years. They raised six children.
"Mom was the heart of the family, " said her son, Curtis Bihl of Newport, who now owns the store. "She was always there for all of us."
During the holidays it was common for the Bihls to work until 8 or 9 p.m. nightly, especially as Christmas drew near.
"But she always made Christmas special, " her son said.
"Everybody came to our house for the holiday. Mom showered us with little toys and gifts. They weren't expensive, but they were meaningful."
Mrs. Bihl was a petite woman with an understated style and a calm demeanor who could cope with anything, her son said.
"If you needed someone to talk to, you talked to Mom, " he said.
She had been an only child and reveled in her large family of six children and 11 grandchildren, her son said.
Mrs. Bihl was an executive secretary for the American Book Company in Cincinnati before joining her husband full time in the jewelry story in the 1970s.
They retired about 10 years ago and enjoyed traveling.
She became ill 15 months ago and was diagnosed with leukemia.
Survivors in addition to her husband and son are another son, Bryan Bihl of Butler; daughters, Michelle Cole of Russell Springs, Kimberly Hoffert of Chicago, Denise Jensen of Carlisle, Pa., and Robin Turner of Melbourne; and 11 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home.

Jo Ann Beard, 62, of Carrollton, died Friday at Audubon Medical Center, Louisville. She was a former quality control inspector for Ameriform/Kawneer, Milton, and a member of United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton.
Survivors include her son, Michael E. Beard Jr. of Carrollton and a granddaughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at United Pentecostal Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Fred A. Benken, 75, of Edgewood, died Thursday in an automobile accident on I-275 near Lakeside Park.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wood Benken of Edgewood; sons, Kirk J. Benken and Kent B. Benken, both of Daytona Beach, Fla., Kim R. Benken of Orlando, Fla., Alan Scott Benken of Erlanger, and Donald Steven Benken of Latonia; daughters, Karen Benken of San Antonio, Texas and Tracy Hare of Florence; and 12 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Dicy Ann Liford, 89, of Elsmere, died Thursday Woodcrest Manor Nursing Home, Erlanger. She was a former lodge worker for Cumberland Falls State Park and a member of Goldbug Baptist Church, Williamsburg. Stepsons, Eugene Liford, Tam Liford and Monroe Liford Jr., all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Opal Lea Jones of Erlanger; stepdaughters, Flora Liford of Williamsburg and Pauline Rhoden of Corbin; a stepson, Paul Liford of Louisville; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 12 stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Womens Crisis Center, 835 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.
Alice Marie Miles, 49, of Newcastle, Del., died Tuesday at Christiana Hospital, Newark, Del. She was a nurse's aide and a nanny.
Survivors include daughters, Evelyn Gifford of Cincinnati and Teresa Newsome of Covington; parents, Evelyn and Kenneth Miles of Stigler, Okla.; sisters, Jean Bramlage of Independence and Veronica Davis of Stigler; brothers, Charles Miles of Independence and Jerry Miles of Covington; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hampton Funeral Home, Barbourville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery, Swan Lake.
Eugene Pierson, 73, of Covington died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired host for Tam Crest Country Club, Teaneck, N.J.
Survivors include his niece, Ruth Roberts of Cold Spring; and a nephew, Norval Johnson of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from noon until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Francis Doyle Smith, 84, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was retired from General Motors, Norwood, Ohio, a farmer and a World War II veteran of the Army.
Survivors include nephews, Darrell W. Smith of Crittenden and Ronnie K. Smith and Warren L. Smith, both of Dry Ridge.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
William Weaver, 75, of Union, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a jet engine tester for General Electric, a lay visitation minister for Fellowship of Believers Church and a member of Boone-Union Masonic Lodge No. 304 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Weaver; sons, Kenneth Weaver of Dry Ridge, Kevin Weaver of Union, Kent Weaver of Morning View, Kelly Weaver of California and Keith Weaver and Kerry Weaver, both of Florence; sisters, Sandra May of Carrollton and Sally Carpenter of Grenada; a brother, Gene Weaver of Union; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Fellowship of Believers Church, 6800 Hazel, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Mayme Wilson, 75, of Covington, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of Kentaboo Baptist Church, Florence. Her husband, Charles Wilson, died in 1976.
Survivors include her sons, Charles Wilson of Latonia, Larry Wipfel of Dallas, Texas, and Joe Wipfel of Detroit, Mich.; daughters, Marsha King of Florence and Cheryl Wilson of Burlington; a brother, Harold Whitlock of Oxford, Ohio; a sister, Mary Herrman of Covington; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Catchen Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Robert A. Wise, 65, of Colerain Township, Ohio, died Thursday at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash. He was a laborer in commercial construction.
Survivors include his wife, Jean M. Wise; brothers, Louis Wise of Ohio and Richard Wise of Fort Thomas; and a sister, Helen Burke of Ohio.
A memorial Mass will be at the convenience of the family.
