Christine Hutson Hurst, nursing home caregiver
Christine Hutson Hurst cared for elderly people in nursing homes with the same warmth she showed family.
Mrs. Hurst of Florence, died at 1:50 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was 74.
She had worked on the assembly line at RCA Corp. in Cincinnati for 21 years while raising five children.
After she left RCA, she worked as a caregiver at Garrard Street Convalescent Center and Hathaway Court in Covington.
"All the people she worked with loved her, " said her granddaughter, Misty Cotton of Williamstown.
She had a dry sense of humor and a self-assured manner.
"She was a strong, tough lady, " her granddaughter said.
Mrs. Hurst married
Charles L. "Humpy" Hurst in Jellico, Tenn., when she was 15.
They moved to Northern Kentucky where he took a job driving a truck for Kentucky Chemical.
"She took care of the children, and she was always there for the grandchildren, " said Cotton.
"She taught me how to take care of myself."
She had a stroke in 1988 and retired from Hathaway Court. She had been battling emphysema for about five years.
Survivors include her husband, Charles L. "Humpy" Hurst; daughters, Phyllis Nussbaum of Hebron, Fonda Haskell of Edgewood, Sandy "Pinky" Ferrell of Covington and Robin Hurst of Union; a sister, Marie Clark of Latonia; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
John T. Brewsaugh, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Walton, died Saturday at Lebanon Nursing Home in South Lebanon, Ohio. He was a tool and die maker with General Electric Co., and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Sara Frances Brewsaugh, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Jay Brewsaugh of Lebanon, Ohio, and Dale Brewsaugh of Reading; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 333 Guthrie St., Suite 207, Louisville, Ky. 40202.
Billy Ray Cole, 60, of Latonia, died Saturday at his home. He was a machinist and a member of Latonia Christian Church.
Survivors include daughters, Cindy King and Mechelle Kallmeyer, both of Latonia; a son, Billy Cole Jr. of Latonia; a sister, Irene Yarber of Winchester; a brother, James Cole of Stanton; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Warren F. Toler Funeral Home, Irvine. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in West Irvine Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Latonia Christian Church, 39th and Decoursey Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.
Leona Mae Lee Devenny, 84, of Latonia, died at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired waitress and cashier with Skychef at the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport, and with Twin Oaks and Devou Park golf courses.
Survivors include her husband, Robert William Devenny; a son, Jim Devenny of Park Hills; daughters, Carol Lemkuhl Hillman of Fort Mitchell and Barbara Wimmer of Lakeside Park; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Charles R. Gall, 86, of Edgewood, died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired electrical engineer with Welco Industries Inc., Cincinnati, and a member of national engineering fraternities Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu, and a member of Good Faith Lodge F&AM in Erlanger, Indra Consistory and Scottish Rite. A daughter, Cherry Pilgrim, died in 1996. A son, Mark Gall, died in 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth K. Gall; four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Charles E. Greene Sr., 79, of Florence, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a maintenance worker with Square D. A son, Michael Greene, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Greene; sons, Danny Greene of Crittenden, Gary Greene of Erlanger and Charles Greene Jr. of Covington; a daughter, Connie Greene of Florence; brothers, James Greene of Lexington, Ernest Greene of Iowa and Emery Greene of Harlan; and sisters, Audrey Hood of Middlesboro and Jean Fee of Mason, Ohio.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.
Lorraine Smith Mathis, 76, of Palm Coast, Fla., formerly of Boone County, died Thursday at Hospice Care Center in Port Orange, Fla. She was a real estate saleswoman with Preferred Properties Inc., a member of Sand Run Baptist Church in Hebron and Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 Ladies Auxiliary in Covington.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Clemons of Palm Coast; a son, Van Smith of Warsaw; brothers, Riley Presser of San Diego and Charles Presser of Racine, Wis.; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

James L. McCann, 81, of Cold Spring, died at 9:13 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired field service representative with International Harvester, Cincinnati, a member of the Harvester Retiree Club and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle McCann; a daughter, Barbara Riley of Melbourne; sons, Rick McCann of St. Louis and Jim McCann of Cold Spring; three granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.

Thomas C. Morris, 55, of Covington, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a bartender with Summit Hills Country Club in Crestview Hills.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela McCane of Belleuve; a stepson, John Clark of Edgewood; his mother, Virginia Grove Morris of Cincinnati; sisters, Terry Brown of Cincinnati and Linda Litton of Park Hills; a brother, Robert Morris of Indiana; and a granddaughter.

Vern Otto Mueller, 66, of Kulm, N.D., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at Moorhead Health Care Center in Moorhead, Minn. He was a minister, having retired from active ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Dayton earlier this year.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Bartel Kulm of West Fargo, N.D.; sons, John Mueller of Rochester, N.Y., Jeremy Mueller of Las Vegas and Matthew Mueller of Bradford, Pa.; daughters, Karen Johnson of Allegany, Pa., Dawn Mueller of Newark, Calif., and Hope Garnett of Warren, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Shanda Cossette of West Fargo; a sister, Jane Mueller of Kulm; a brother, John M. Mueller Nowell of Burnsville, Minn.; and six grandchildren.

Gary Dewayne Oak, 51, of Carrollton, died Friday at Queensgate Railyard in Cincinnati. He was a carman with CSX Railroad and a member of Campbellsburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Justin T. Oak of Carrollton and Aaron Oak of Smyrna, Tenn.; a daughter, Ashley Oak of Smyrna; his mother and stepfather, Maureen and Richard Luhn of Bedford; brothers, Ricky Oak and Mark Luhn, both of Carrollton; and a grandchild.

James I. Remmell, 81, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Erlanger, died Saturday at Mease Hospital in Dunedin, Fla. He was realtor, a retired broadcast engineer with WCET Channel 48 and a member of Clearwater Board of Realtors and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
His first wife, Virginia Stephens Remmell, died in 1977.
Survivors include his wife, Alina S. Remmell; daughters, Linda Rebelo of Reston, Va., and Agnes Sulkowski of Clearwater; sons, James Remmell Jr. of Cincinnati and Robert Sulkowski of Parrish, Fla.; a sister, Jeannette Bush of Taylor Mill; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Anna Mae Schnell, 91, of Bellevue, died Saturday at her home.

Arthur T. Smith, 72, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired soil conservation service engineer and a member of Cynthiana Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Polley Humphrey Smith; a stepson, Jennings Edwin Humphrey of Denver; sisters, Vivian Morere of Horahan, La., Rita Buckingham of Opelika, Ala., and Callie Adams of Lafayette, Ala.; two step-grandsons and two step-great-grandchildren.

Robert Walters, 77, of Erlanger, died Friday at his home. He was a retired electrician with Queen City Radio and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church, Good Faith Lodge No. 95 F&AM and U.S. Submarine Veterans. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Walters; a daughter, Cathy Stubblefield of Fort Collins, Colo.; a son, Robert Dean Walters of Randolph, Ohio; a sister, Ernestine Ward of Paintsville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
