Dorothy Pauly Bolte, liked to help veterans
Fighting his way across the Pacific during World War II, Victor Bolte uttered a simple prayer: "Lord, let me get home safe and find a good girl and have six children."
Bolte survived the war and did indeed return to Northern Kentucky to find a "good girl" - Dorothy Pauly, who would become his wife in 1947 and collaborate on the second part of his petition, the six children. The Boltes were married
55 years before her death Monday at age 78 at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
His mother was not a person to seek the limelight, said the Rev. Rick Bolte, pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Newport. "She was not one so much to be out in front, she was supportive of my father. She would make her own niche in things that he was involved in."
That was the case in the Boltes' work at the veterans home in Fort Thomas, where Mrs. Bolte helped her husband sponsor monthly social activities for residents. "We'd do bingo, bring them gifts, do entertainment for them, " Victor Bolte said. "They all loved her."
His wife had a few favorites among the residents, usually veterans who were particularly beset by health problems. She made sure that each visit she lavished a little extra attention on them, Bolte said.
She was always there for veterans' groups annual fund-raising poppy sales, he said, even in recent years when health problems - a bad heart and lungs, diabetes and arthritis - dogged her. "No matter how bad she felt, she was always out there in front of the bank in Elsmere selling poppies, sometimes all day in the rain, " Victor Bolte said.
His mother was very proud of the fact that he became a priest, Rick Bolte said, but she and his father never pushed him into it. "I was motivated by their faith and their example, " he said.
And their prayers, which his parents said a lot of for all their children, although Rev. Bolte acknowledged: "They didn't always say what they were praying for."
Rev. Bolte will preach his mother's funeral at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church in Florence.
