Mary Mershon, 79, volunteer at church
Mary Frances Gunning Mershon, 79, of Independence, who worked at the former Liberty Cherry factory in Latonia and volunteered for church and school activities, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Covington.
Mrs. Mershon worked 20 years at Liberty Cherry, where fresh cherries were candied and jarred.
"It was hard work, and they didn't have air conditioning back then, " said her son, Tom Mershon of Independence. "She sometimes would bring samples home, and they were awfully good."
Mrs. Mershon was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Independence and volunteered at the St. Cecilia school cafeteria and at church festivals.
"Hot lunches were provided to students, and my mother volunteered to work in the cafeteria once or twice a week, " said Tom Mershon.
"She was a very kind and loving person. She was always looking out for folks who were underachievers or the downtrodden. She enjoyed helping them."
Mrs. Mershon was a member of the Independence Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and a former member of the Independence Ladies Auxiliary.
She and her late husband, Tilford Mershon, who died in 1981, enjoyed traveling and especially liked spending time in Naples, Fla.
Other survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Code of Erlanger; a sister, Marjorie Custer of Knoxville, Tenn., and a brother, Thomas Urban Gunning of Morning View.
Funeral services will be at noon Friday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Independence. Visitation will be at the church Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41011.

Gary L. Arrasmith, 52, of Florence, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at VA Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a former machinist for Spati Industries, Ludlow, a member of Union Baptist Church and Disabled American Veterans, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Davis; sons, Christopher S. Arrasmith and Justin S. Arrasmith, both of Union; mother, Bertha Doolin Arrasmith of Union; a sister, Bonnie Moore of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Wilda Jo "Jody" Bell, 73, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a retired tax preparer with Raisor, Zapp & Wood and the former Bramel & Ackley Accounting Office, and a member of United Methodist Church of Carrollton. Her husband, Dean Hays Bell, died in 1985.
Survivors include a cousin, Mary Alice Hill of Carrollton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Chester E. Campbell, 96, of Butler, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a farmer and a member of Butler Baptist Church. He was a member of the board of Farmers National Bank in Butler, Owen County Rural Electric Board and Butler cemetery board. His wife, Mae Stith Campbell, died in 1988.
Survivors include cousins.

Robert P. Clark, 60, of Latonia, died Tuesday at Veterans Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a maintenance worker and a member of Bellevue Eagles Bluegrass No. 964, Bob White Club and American Legion Post No. 200, Louisville.
Survivors include cousins.

Wallace Clayton Cole, 21, of Elsmere, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Survivors include his father, Wallace Cole of Newport; mother and stepfather, Nellie and Sterling Cole of Elsmere; sisters, Kimberly Cole and Lisa Messer, both of Elsmere; and grandparents, Ruby and Perry Messer of Elsmere and Ellen Cole of Newport.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Jean Dennemann, 76, of Urbana, Ill., formerly of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana. She was a retail manager with Ernest Market in Covington. She was a former member of Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205. She was a former VFW district president for the auxiliary and state president. Her husband, Frank Dennemann Sr., died in 1991.
Survivors include sons, Michael Dennemann of Fisher, Ill., and Frank Dennemann Jr. of Grants Lick; a daughter, Helen Jordan of Claryville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Deborah Jones Dugan, 50, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Ludlow.
Survivors include her husband, James Dugan; sons, Charles Dugan and Roger Jones, both of Covington; a daughter, Shelly Fleckinger of Erlanger; her parents, James Jones and Doris Brewster, both of Covington; brothers, Ronnie Jones of Erlanger and Bill Ones of Ludlow; sisters, Judy Long of Gatlinburg, Tenn., Theresa Rothfuss of Latonia, Pam Eggleston of Glencoe, Tenn., and Bobbie Chandler of Covington; and six grandchildren.

Phyllis A. Hiatt, 67, of Burlington, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a laborer with Equitable Bag Co.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Hiatt; daughters, Kathleen Stotts of Burlington and Rona Schaller of Demossville; sons, Chester Lainheart of Dry Ridge, Ron Hiatt of Burlington and Timothy Hiatt of Independence; a brother, Thomas Abdon of Petersburg; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Hughes, 76, of Florence, died Tuesday at Villaspring Health Care Center, Erlanger. She was a medical technician with University Hospital and a member of Florence Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Hughes; sons, Lloyd Hughes of West Chester, Ohio, and Ronald Hughes of Florence; a sister, Jean Daniels of Boca Raton, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Helen Ann Kaiser, 78, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a receptionist with Overhead Door Co. and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence. Her husband, George Kaiser, died in 1971.
Survivors include daughters, Vickie Kaiser of Somerset and Cindy Russell of Independence; a brother, Frank Sarkany of San Diego; and three grandchildren.

Geraldine Riffle, 76, of Corinth, died Wednesday at her home. She was a retired employee of Dixie Vending Co. and a member of Erlanger Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, James William Riffle; daughters, Cheryl L. Kordenbrock of Erlanger and Karen J. Miller of Corinth; a son, Kevin J. Riddle of Erlanger; a sister, Pat Gordon of Vancouver, Wash.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Gertrude Curnayn Schneider, 90, of Greenville, S.C., died Sunday in Greenville. She was a retired employee of Lawrence Mitchell Co. and a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas.
She was a former Sunday school superintendent with the church. Her husband, George Howard Schneider, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Barry R. Schneider of Montgomery, Ala.; a daughter, Diane B. Lee of Anderson, S.C.; and a grandchild.

Bernard Sehlhorst, 92, of Covington, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a construction supervisor with Cinergy and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.
Survivors include sons, Edward Sehlhorst of Blountville, Tenn., and Tom Sehlhorst of Clearwater, Fla.; and a grandchild.
Memorial Mass will be at noon Saturday at Mother of God Church.
Mr. Sehlhorst bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Patricia Ann Sipple, 62, of Independence, died at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday at her home.
She was a retired social worker with the state of Kentucky, a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia and a Tupperware saleswoman.
A daughter, Kimberly Petty, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Gene Sipple; sons, Brett Petty of Kenosha, Wis., Todd Petty of Independence and Mark Petty of Warren, Mich.; stepsons, Doug Sipple of Florence and Steve Sipple of Burlington; a daughter, Sherri Pennington-Holt of Erlanger; a stepdaughter, Connie Wallace of Florence; her mother, Maude Haynes of Latonia; a brother, Tom Brumback of Latonia; and 16 grandchildren.

Julia Stenken Stammer, of Berea, formerly of Covington, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a former teacher with Lloyd High School, executive director of the Berea College Appalachian Fund and was active with the Girl Scouts.
Along with her husband Raymond Drukker, who preceded her in death, Mrs. Stammer started the United Way campaign in Madison County and was a volunteer with the Madison County Red Cross.
He was a member of the board of Berea Hospital, Union Church in Berea and the Arlington Country Club.
Survivors include a niece, Carol Stenken Beirne of Fort Wright.

Margaret M. Steffen, 90, of Alexandria, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Church in Alexandria and several seniors groups. Her husband, George Frank Steffen, died in 1966. A son, George "Bud" Steffen, died July 8.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Rauch of Alexandria and Marge Born of Indianapolis; sons, Herb Steffen of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Melvin Steffen of Southgate; a brother, Robert Weckbach of Alexandria; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Lewis Dunn Tolle, 75, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Central Baptist Church, Lexington.
He was a retired postal worker with the U.S. Postal Service, a member and former deacon with Cynthiana Christian Church and a member of Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438, Cynthiana Country Club and Kentucky Softball Association Hall of Fame. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Flora Tolle; nieces and nephews.

James Warren Vice, 81, of Camp Verde, Ariz., died at 4:19 p.m. Monday at VA Medical Center, Prescott, Ariz.
He was a retired staff sergeant in the Air Force and a member of Dry Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include his sister, Caroline Ransdell of Williamstown.

Gary M. Waits, 54, of Ludlow, died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a bartender and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was a retired special education teacher with Silver Grove School, Lloyd Memorial High School and the Campbell County Juvenile Detention Center.
He was most recently a case manager with Clermont County Treatment Alternative For Street Crimes.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Thomas Wilkinson; a son, Joseph T. Wilkinson of Edgewood; a daughter, Becky Leigh Tillery of Nicholasville; his mother, Gertrude H. Wilkinson of Norwood, Ohio; and a grandson.
