Bill Grainger coached kids, devoted time to church
John William "Bill" Grainger took delight in coaching youth sports teams. "He was very interested in helping children through the sports that he coached, " said Mr. Grainger's wife of 49 years, Marilyn Grainger.
He served as a youth football, baseball and softball coach.
Mr. Grainger, 71, of Bellevue, former owner of Grainger Wallpaper and Painting Co., died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
After operating the family wallpaper and painting business for 30 years, Mr. Grainger worked 10 years as a property evaluator for the state of Kentucky.
He retired in 1993 after suffering a stroke.
Mr. Grainger was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Bellevue Veterans Club.
He also was a member of the Campbell County Fish and Game Club and belonged to Sacred Heart Church and Holy Name Society.
"He was very devoted to his family and had a lot of faith in God.
He devoted a lot of his time to church activities, " his wife said. "He suffered from the complications of a stroke the last nine years of his life, but he never complained about it.
He was outgoing and very friendly."
Other survivors include sons, Barry Grainger and Thomas Grainger, both of Bellevue, and Dr. Michael Grainger of Fort Thomas; daughters, Diana Halpin of Cincinnati, Donna Listerman of Taylor Mill and Toni Phillips of Tucson, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.
Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Burial will be in St. Stephen cemetery in Fort Thomas.

Eusevio Alvarez, 34, of Covington, was found dead Nov. 19 in the Ohio River.
He was a dishwasher with Joe's Crab Shack, Bellevue.
Survivors include brothers, Don Pedro Alvarez and Antonio Alvarez, both of Guatemala.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Burial will be in Guatemala.
Donald Eugene Mason, 61, of Elsmere, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at his home following an extended illness.
He was a warehouse manager with SSE Manufacturing, Florence, and Barnes Aero-Space in Covington.
He was a bluegrass musician with the band BluegrassUnlimited.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Doyle Mason; sons, Leslie Keith Mason of Taylor Mill, Christopher Lee Mason of Florence and Curtis Eugene Mason of Covington; brothers, Elmer Mason of Newark, Ohio, Ronnie Mason of Louisville, Shelby Mason of Ghent and Malcom Mason of Blanchester, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
Teddy Morgan, 98, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown.
He was a retired house painter and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Gladys McGill of Cincinnati; nieces and a nephew.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday.
Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Dorothy Jean Bramlage Robinson, 78, of Morning View, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of Piner Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Robinson Sr.; daughters, Dotty Peebles of Morning View and Ruth Penick of Dry Ridge; sons, Leonard Robinson Jr. and Charles Allen Robinson, both of Crittenden, Michael John Robinson of Independence and David Wayne Robinson of Morning View; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Helen Emma Stewart, 68, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker.
A son, Michael Stewart, died in 1987.
Survivors include her husband, Monty B. Stewart Sr.; a son, Monty B. Stewart Jr. of Cincinnati; a daughter, Debra Prewitt of Newport; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Edward Charles Sunderman, 80, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Villaspring Health Care Center, Erlanger.
He was a mail carrier, and a member of Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 in Dayton, the National Association of Letter Carriers and Postal Union Locla No. 374, Newport.
A son, Glenn Edward Sunderman, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Sunderman; and a brother, Fred Sunderman of San Mateo, Calif.
Services will be at noon Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
