Marie Aldemeyer, helped husband's political career
Many wives, at least privately, aren't happy when their husbands decide to seek political office. The long hours of campaigning. The never-ending social functions. The public criticism.
But that wasn't the case with Marie Napier Aldemeyer, who helped her husband, Democrat Robert Aldemeyer, win and serve seven terms as Kenton County commissioner and another as judge-executive.
Mrs. Aldemeyer would happily join her husband on weekend jaunts to various social dances -- an important campaigning tool in those days.
She also canvassed door-to-door on his behalf and ran his campaign office.
"I think it was a combination of things, " Aldemeyer said. "I think she did it partly for me, but she also really enjoyed being part of the community."
Mrs. Aldemeyer, 61, of Crestview Hills, died at 5:53 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
In addition to fulfilling numerous duties for her husband's political career, she was also a member of Community of Faith Presbyterian Church, Covington, a member and past president of Covington Art Club, and past president of the Sixth District School and Holmes High School PTAs.
The Aldemeyers met when Marie was dating Robert's best friend. That friend, however, left for Australia and married, so Robert and Marie began dating.
"Her heart was as beautiful as her face, " said Aldemeyer. "I loved her so much."
It was shortly after the two were married
that Aldemeyer, then a juvenile officer, decided to run for Kenton County commissioner because he was unable to get a pay raise.
Aldemeyer said he lost that race by 71 votes, but ran again four years later, and with the support of his wife, won by more than 5, 000 votes, thus beginning his life in politics.
Other survivors include a son, Gary Aldemeyer of Taylor Mill, and a brother, Eugene Napier of Frankfort.
