C.A. Barnard Jr., 77, soft-spoken, dedicated
C.A. Barnard Jr. exhibited dedication in a variety of ways.
Many saw it in his volunteer and civic work. Others saw it in his marriage of almost 54 years.
The Rev. William Frank Barnard, a brother from California, Ky., saw it in a very personal way as he battled acute leukemia earlier this year.
His brother visited at least 16 times during his first bout with the disease, and even more during a second. Each bout lasted about 30 days.
"That was just the type of guy he was, " William Barnard said. "He was soft-spoken and fun-loving, but he was always there if you needed him."
Mr. Barnard, 77, of Crestview Hills, died Monday at his home.
He was treasurer and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church, a past president and director of the Erlanger Lions Club, a member of Good Faith Masonic Lodge No. 95 F&AM in Erlanger, Indra Consistory Scottish Rite in Covington and the International Arabian Horse Association.
Mr. Barnard was so dedicated to his job as a mechanic with General Motors in Hamilton, Ohio, that he put off retiring twice - with 30 and then 32 years of service - before he finally called it a career after 38 years.
In retirement, he adopted one of the favorite pastimes of his son and grandchildren: going to horse shows.
"His son had a farm in Milford, Ohio, and he spent a lot of time up there, " his brother said. "He really enjoyed being around the horses, and it gave him a chance to spend time with his family."
Other survivors include his wife, Kitty Ramsey Barnard; a son, Michael Barnard of Goshen, Ohio; a sister, Betty Schlueter of California; and three grandchildren.
