John `Jack' Von Bokern, recognized for work
John "Jack" Von Bokern, who won state recognition for his work with senior citizens and community activism, died Friday at his Highland Heights home of complications from emphysema. He was 73.
Mr. Von Bokern lived most of his life in Bellevue and had a hard time walking down the street without meeting someone he knew. He and his wife, Joyce, ran Von's Delicatessen from the 1960s to the early 1990s.
Requests to put together party trays led to a full catering business in the 1970s said his son, Steve Von Bokern of Greer, S.C. "Dad knew the life stories of everybody who came in the store, " said his son. "He had such a rapport with people. He always tried to look at the positive side of people."
He had a quick wit, an easy laugh, and a talent for making people feel like they were part of the party.
Mr. Von Bokern was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. He served on the Northern Kentucky Health Service Council, Comprehensive Care of Northern Kentucky board and the Campbell County Water Commission. He also served on the boards of Catholic Social Services, Corva's Health Planning Council, the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky, Welcome House and Bellevue Vets.
He was a founding member of the Bellevue Civic Association, which was started after the city's centennial celebration in 1970. In a Kentucky Post interview in 1996, Bellevue Mayor Tom Wiethorn saluted Mr. Von Bokern's contribution to the city's success.
"Whenever there has been anything innovative in Bellevue, he's been there. When we got the street banners, Christmas lights, community gardens - Jack and the Civic Association spearheaded those."
Mr. Von Bokern served on the Northern Kentucky Development District board for 24 years and was a strong advocate for housing programs for seniors. When the city of Bellevue turned the former St. Anthony School into the Washington Apartments for seniors, Von Bokern became manager of the senior center in the building. He organized programs, used his catering skills to perk up the meal program, and turned the tiny center with a tinier budget into a powerhouse of activities for older residents.
In 1996 he was named Kentucky Senior of the Year by the Association of Older Kentuckians. When he was interviewed for his honor, he spent most of the time spreading the credit to fellow workers and volunteers.
He was diagnosed with emphysema about five years ago.
