Thomas Schuetz, owned electric motor repair shop
Thomas J. Schuetz loved the electric motor repair business that he started and nurtured over 40 years so much that he had trouble taking time off from it.
"Other people look forward to the weekend, " said his son, Steven A. Schuetz of Elsmere.
"When the weekend came, he looked forward to Monday. He just loved the people, just loved being there."
Thomas Schuetz, who lived in Corinth, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County.
He was 71.
Mr. Schuetz, who was an orphan, went to work in his first electric motor repair shop at age 15.
After four years in the Navy as an electrician's mate during the Korean War, he returned to his native Covington and the same kind of work.
In 1961, he opened his first shop, on Pike Street in Covington.
He moved it to a larger building in Park Hills in 1985, and last year opened a Florence location that caters to industrial and public utility customers.
"We do sales and service, everything from bathroom exhaust fans to rock-crusher motors, " said Steven Schuetz, who joined the business in summer 1975 as a part-timer and now owns and operates it.
Illness finally ended Thomas Schuetz's daily trips to the shop about four months ago, but his son kept him updated with daily faxes and phone calls.
"I'd start talking business with him, and it'd bring him up, " Steven Schuetz said.
Thomas Schuetz was a Catholic.
