Raymond Bittner, 71, co-owner of steel firm
Raymond H. Bittner, 71, of Florence, who helped resurrect Newport Steel Corp. 21 years ago, died Monday at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was a retired vice president of marketing for Newport Steel and a co-owner of the firm.
After Interlake Steel closed its Newport and Wilder plants in 1980, Mr. Bittner was one of four Interlake executives who raised $35 million to buy the facilities and resume steel-making operations under the name Newport Steel Corp.
"He was a key person who helped us put the package together, " said Newport Steel Chairman Cliff Borland of Fort Mitchell. "He was very well respected throughout the steel industry."
Mr. Bittner had worked 25 years for the old Newport Steel Corp. and its successor, Interlake, and when Interlake shut down the Newport operations in 1980, Mr. Bittner said, "I had tears in my eyes."
He quickly teamed with Borland, Dennis Eggleston and Ron Noel to revive Newport Steel.
"Ray was the salesman in our group of four and he headed our sales operations after we got started back up, " said Borland. "He was a great salesman with a magnetic personality.
"Everybody liked Ray. You can't say anything but good things about him. We spent a lot of good times together resurrecting Newport Steel and getting it going again."
Mr. Bittner graduated from Newport Catholic High School and studied at the University of Kentucky and Villa Madonna College. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and went to work at the old Newport Steel Corp. in 1955.
